Hello again, I am searching for information on my great great grandparents.

Hello again IrelandXO folk,

I've given you guys a bit of a break but here I go again. I'm trying to get some info on my great great grandparents. Here goes...

On my grandmothers Mary Malone's side I have her 4 grandparents  they are :

1.Alexander Malone born 1839/40 wicklow town ireland. lived at 4 Castle street at one time. Wicklow town

2.His wife Ellen Malone born 1839/40. maybe died November 5,1919? 79 years old?

3.Then Garret Hanlon born 1862/63 Wicklow town. lived at 1 Castle Street at one time.

4.His wife Mary Hanlon born Reilly 1864/65. all from Wicklow town I think.

Then on my grandfather Edward Morgan's side:

1.His father Peter Morgan born 1864/65 Wicklow town . I don't know his parents.

2. His wife Rose Morgan born 1866 or sooner. baptized Dec 23 1866. Her maiden name was China. but name varies to Shiner- Shinar througout the ages.

Her parents might have been William Shinar and Jane Shinar nee Ryan.

Then I found a Jane China in the 1901 census. 48 years old. residing at 3 Ball Alley. Maybe born 1853. widowed. Wicklow town. Could not find Ball Alley on any current wicklow town map.Maybe built over after 100 years. Happens in New York City all the time. I wonder if she's my great great grandmother or aunt..

Anyhow I would certainly appreciate any hellp the team can provide.  Thank you, Matthew

  • Ball Alley is still present in Wicklow town,, it's located just off Summer Hill in the south east of the town - see the attached modern and c1890s historic maps from OSI/GeoHive.

Are you certain that the people you mentioned were born in Wicklow town ?
I would suggest starting with the marriages for the couples to establish further clues before starting a search for their baptisms, you would also need the maiden surname of the wives to start searches for them,

A quick search of Wicklow parish baptisms shows one Alexander Malone baptism, on the 10th April 1836 to parents Alex Malone & Susan Dolan[?], nothing promising for any of the other males in Wicklow parish. I think the probable baptism for Rose was mentioned in the earlier post on this family  - Rosanna Shinan baptised in Wicklow RC parish on the 12th December 1866, to parents William Shinan and Jane Ryan (NLI Registers - entry is near the top of the left page).

A check for additional children for this couple show two siblings to Rose, both baptised in Wicklow town - Charles Shinar bapt. 9th May 1862 and William Shinean baptised 29th October 1873. I also extended the search for siblings to adjacent parishes but did not find any others, I found a possible marriage for William and Jane also in Wicklow town with yet another spelling variation - William Cheyne married Jane Ryan on the 27th January 1867 (see the lower section of the right hand page). Witnesses to the marriage are a Pat Kelly and Mary Farrell. The corresponding civil marriage record should include a little more detail - e.g. occupations, father's names and this should be available on the free IrishGenealogy website soon.

  • Yes I think your correct that not all were from Wicklow town. I see a possible match for great grandfather Garrett Hanlon as being born August 28,1864 in Dublin County, Rathdown, Kingstown. His parents were James Hanlon of Mulgrave Street and Catherine Hanlon formerly Smith. Could you help find some information on my great great grandparents James and Catherine?

                                                                                                                                                                                                      Thanks, Matt

P.S. I originally started this quest in late April 2017. Many of the links that were originally provided by you guys are no longer leading anywhere. Is it possible to get the original links active again? Thanks. MG
