I am a descendant of Abraham Neville born 1799 and Margaret Molloy born 1814.  They had five children in Ireland, Joseph (1841), Mary(1843), Anna Bridget(1844), John(1847) and William (1853).  Sarah Jane was born in New York state (1855), the twins Hubert and Margaret were born in Quebec Canada in 1859.  Abraham died in Canada in 1873.

Margaret Molloy Neville took most of the children to York, Nebraska. Margaret died there in 1905. Many members of this famly still reside in Nebraska.

I am looking for updates on this famly.

  • HI Barbara,

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) for relatives of Abraham and Margaret. The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. The Tithe Applotment List might be of use to you, or at least interesting for you. These lists constitute the only nationwide survey for the period, and are valuable because the heaviest burden of the tithes to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland, fell on the poorest, for whom few other records survive. The information in the Tithes is quite basic, typically consisting of townland name, landholder's name, area of land and tithes payable. Many Books also record the landlord's name and an assessment of the economic productivity of the land. The tax payable was based on the average price of wheat and oats over the seven years up to 1823, and was levied at a different rate depending on the quality of land. For Parishes where the registers do not begin until after 1850, this information can be useful, as they are often the only surviving early records. They can provide valuable circumstantial evidence, especially where a holding passed from father to son in the period between the Tithe survey and Griffith's Valuation.

You might also follow on this search with information from Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. This will assist in seeing what happened to any land the family may have owned (as it usually passed on to a relation). Or a check of the Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm .   There is lots of useful information to be found in the 1901 and 1911 census records which can be helpful in finding relatives.  You can find this here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ .

Church records may also be of use to you. Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870 are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/. Some catholic registers are held in the National Library of Ireland, others are held locally. You may try contacting the local parish offices for assistance.

I wish you the best of luck with your search.

  • Thank you,

I have William Nevil in the Lynally Glebe Tithe Applotment Book.  I have also made copies of the cancel books for Lynally Glebe.  I have added all of that with Griffith's valuation and put it on a spread sheet.  I can tract the whole neighborhood from 1830 to 1910.

William Nevil can also be found in the 1802 Protestant List and he is living in Lynally.  The family moved there to help build Charleville Castle.  The family is listed as William Nevils, wife, children: Jane, Joseph, Abraham and William.

The family in Ireland told me that William's wife was Mary Bagnall.

Any ideas of burial records for this family?

    Thank You,

    Barbara

  • Were Mary's parents Jeremiah Neville and Annie McDonald?  I have a photo of her headstone. I have been working on the Neville family for a long time.  I have that they had three children Martha, Paddy and Frank.  I also have a photo of Jeremiah's family.  Joseph Neville and 8 of his children.  Have you seen that photo?  If you would like I can e-mail you a copy of it.
