Hi Can you please help me.

Francis O’Brien was born in Ireland circa 1814 and arrived in Australia in 1852. At the time of his arrival he had a brother already in Australia and his name was Michael O’Brien however I cannot pin point the exact Michael but are currently trying through DNA. Francis married Mary Hogan some time before 1852 in Ireland and their eldest son they named Patrick.

Patrick was born in 1838 in Ireland

Mary Hogan’s father was Dennis Hogan

Francis’s father was a Michael O’Brien and this we know from the emigration documents.

Summary

Michael O’Brien born C 1790 (father of Francis and Michael below)

Francis O’Brien born c1814 and brother Michael O’Brien born C1811

Patrick O’Brien born 1838

Am I correct in assuming that the father of Michael O’Brien (1790) is possibly a Patrick O’Brien

Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Hello Kevin,

If Francis adhered to Irish naming patterns, he would have named his first-born son after his father Michael. If his father Michael followed Irish naming patterns, he would have named his first-born son after his own father. That means if son Michael, born 1811, was the first-born son, he would have been named after his father Michael’s father.

Not all families followed Irish naming patterns however. Ireland Reaching Out has information about “Irish Naming Conventions and Baptism Traditions” which you can access at: https://tinyurl.com/5n8cfhzp

    Kind Regards,
