Hello,

I'm researching my wife's heritage and her great-great grandfather was Owen McCue born in Louth, Ireland in 1843.  I believe his father was Thomas McCue.  I can't find much information about Thomas McCue and someone told me that perhaps the spelling of McCue could have changed at one time for this family.  Owen married Catherine Ginnetty in 1865 and they came to the US in 1866.  So any information of Owen's parents or other McCue information would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Bruce

  • Bruce,

This is just a guess, but there is a Catholic church called Saints Peter and Paul in Tallonstown, Louth that existed back when your relations were baptized, and still stands today. When I searched for churches in that area, the result showed "Tallanstown, Rathbrist"....the two addresses in the above information.

  • Owen McCue's father Thomas McCue I believe his dad was also Thomas McCue and I have his birthdate 1775 in Daver, co, Louth, Ireland.  I don't have a spouse for him either.   Any possibility of finding information on Thomas McCue Sr.   Also, I thought someone said the spelling of McCue could have been at one time McHugh.   Thoughts?

    Thank you so much!!

  • Bruce,

The baptism records for the RC parish of Louth begin in 1833, so neither Thomas would have one. However, the neighboring RC parish of Tallonstown has records back to 1817. I no longer have a rootsireland subscription, so I cannot check for you regarding Thomas. On the free site johngrenham.com, it shows that one of the popular surnames in Tallonstown, RC parish of Tallonstown is McCue; so they might be from there. Current google searches show "Rathbrist, Tallonstown, Louth". The records of marriage/birth for your relatives show Rathbrist in RC parish of Louth, not Tallonstown. There are Griffith's Valuation for three McCue families in three different townlands in the civil parish of Tallanstown, but no Thomas.

Anyhow, McCue and McHugh are variations of the same name as shown by the birth records of sons Patt and Laurence.

    Regards,

    Carolyn
