I am trying to find a parish for my G G grandparents. the information that we have is that Qwen was born 1825 and Mary about 1831 both we think in Mayo.  They show up in 1851 cenus, in Wolverhampton, UK, that is the year they married, in Wolverhampton. It says on the marriage certificate that both of their fathers were named Patrick.  the spelling of the surnames seems to change a lot.

I have my DNA results showing 45% ethenticity to be North Connact, Ireland.   I was born in England, but, now live in Australia.

We are visiting next year and would love to find the actual town or parish for Owen and Mary,

  • Hi, I saw your post re Owen McVeeney/McQueeney.  I have an ancestor Roseanna McWeeney/McQueeney.  She married Michael Ward in the parish of Kiltubbrid, County Leitrim on 11 Feb 1861 and they emigrated to US in 1863.  Not sure if any connection but it might be an area worth checking.  Good luck.   Marguerite

  • You say you think they were from Mayo. What has led you to think it was Mayo?

Was Mary's age stated on marriage certificate or did it say "full age"? Were their fathers alive at time of the marriage and were the fathers' occupations given? Were the fathers in England too or could they have remained in Ireland? If you think they were still alive and in Ireland they might have been included on Griffiths' Valuation.

Have you managed to trace Owen & Mary forwards through later census years to see if either gave more information about place of birth?

Do you know names of any brothers or sisters?

Do you know  religious denomination of Owen or Mary?

If you haven't already done so, look at Irish Genealogy Toolkit website. It has guidance on many topics including what to do if you don't know place of birth of your Irish ancestor. Select "Genealogy" tab on Home page.   https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com

  • Hi Maggie

On the 1851 cenus they are in Wolverhampton UK.the entry is as follows

the house hold of Michael and Bridget Igo

    NAME                          BIRTH YEAR                             WHERE BORN

Owen McQueny       1827              visitor                         Mayo Ireland

Mary Rewan                 1833               Lodger                       Mayo Ireland

Mary McQueney            1831               Lodger                      Mayo Ireland

    in 1850 a Eugenious Mc Veeny was Godfather to Thomas Igo  son of Michael and Bridget at St. Patricks Wolverhampton {Catholic}

In 1851 Owen McVeeny married Mary Rowan at St. Peter and Paul Church Wolverhampton

Both fathers were named Patrick, Owens father is deceaced and Mary's is living.    They are all Laborers  Owen is an Agricultural Laborer

the name changes between McQueny            McVeeny      since the late 1800 in UK it has become Queeney.

We know about them from 1851 to today.   It is in Ireland the seach goes cold.   I will keep searching, it seems that Owen and Mary McQueny were brother and sister.

          Thankyou
