I’m trying to find original copies of my great grandfather’s book “Birth and Adoption: A Book of Prose and Poetry” published  1904. Also looking for the family of Rocky’s younger sister Johanna O’Brien Dillon, wife of Michael Dillon married in Caheragh

  • I have been asked by Jane Halloran Ryan of IrelandXO to help you if I can with your query as regards Johanna O'Brien. Could you please give me some indication of her year of birth, a rough idea will be sufficient. Could you also say if you have any idea of her parents names, even first names would be a help but her mothers Maiden name would prove the correct family conclusively.  Had she and Patrick any siblings and do you have any idea of the year of her marriage?

It would be great if you could get back to me as soon as possible on the above either on this page or by email to my personal address, frankfahy@eircom.net  .  Either way I will respond on this message board.

  • Hi Matt,

my apologies for delay in getting back to you but it might have been worth the wait as I found another couple of children of John and Ellen you may not have known about. Here is a link to irishgenealogy.ie website where you will find the transcribed information and if you go to the image button near the bottom of each entry, you will find the original entry in the church register of baptisms.     https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/search.jsp?namefm….

A couple of facts which might help you in your research are (1) Dromore is in the Parish of Caheragh but if you are searching for people baptised, married or who died in that parish, use the spelling "Caharagh" rather than Caheragh as there is some glitch which will not allow the website to operate properly with the correct spelling. (2)
Dromore is a Townland with its own church in the parish of Caheragh and Gortnascreena is the next Townland to the East and is also in the parish of Caheragh, so effectively, it appears that the family lived in Gortnascreena and any marriages of the females in the family by tradition would have been married in Dromore Church but the record would appear in the Caheragh Register and their home address would have been given a Gortnascreena. All of the information written in the Register would have been at the discretion of the presiding Priest at the ceremony, his familiarity with the family address and any other information passed to him on the day.
The detail of the children is as follows with erroneous spelling corrected. Name spelling and other errors are a common feature of Church entries in all records. It has been suggested that the clergyman was standing too close to the alter wine at these events.

Ellen O'Brien of John O'Brien & Ellen Brophy of Gortnascreena, 23 March 1841 Sponsors: Henry Donovan & Mary McCarthy
Catherine O'Brien of John O'Brien & Ellen Brophy of Gortnascreena, 07 Sep 1843 Sponsors: Robert Barry & Catherine Hurley
    Mary O'Brien of John O'Brien & Ellen Brophy of Gortnascreena, 27 May 1846 Sponsors:Cornelius Cohane & Ellen O'Leary
Patrick O'Brien of John O'Brien & Ellen Brophy of Gortnascreena, 15 Mar 1848. Sponsors: Richard Haly & Julia Sullivan
John O'Brien of John O'Brien & Ellen Brophy of Gortnascreena, 12 Jun 1851 Sponsors:William Driscoll & Catherine Goggin
    Johanna O'Brien of John O'Brien & Ellen Brophy of Gortnascreena,06 Sep 1857, Sponsors: Tim O'Brien & Margaret O'Donovan

I will continue to look for further info and/or to verify what you have and get back to you as soon as possible.
