I’m interested in any connections to the family of Patrick McMahon, farmer, of Kildoorus, Clare.  Patrick was the son of Michael and Honora (nee George).  They had 12 children recorded; Michael (born 1870), Corney (1872), Mary (1874), Frances (1877), Bridget (1879), Patrick (1880), Anne (1882), James (1883), Anne (1885), Martin (1887), Ellen (1890) and Nora (1893).

Known that three daughters emigrated to the USA; Frances (date of sailing not known), Annie (sailed 1910) and Helen (sailed 1911).  Annie gave a contact as her sister Frances in Plainfield, New Jersey and Helen gave contact as Annie, again as Plainfield, New Jersey.

Interested in any futher information on the three ladies as well.

  • Hi:

Thank you for your message board query and apologies for the delay.  The family that you refer to lived in Kildoorus and they are listed on the 1901 & 1911 Census.

    1901 Census:

    1911 Census:

You can follow the civil records for the 1911 members of this family for marriages and deaths at the Irish Genealogy website   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

I see Annie & Helena's arrival into Ellis Island through the Clare Library transcriptions:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/don_tran/emigration/kiltenanlea_parish_through_ellisisland_emigrants.htm

I could not find a record for a Fannie/Frances McMahon from County Clare to Ellis Island.

There is a local person in the Clonlara area who I will ask for information about this family.  She may have other information for you.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Thank you Jane.  Ref Annie's going to the US on the Clare site - I laboured in confusion for some time trying to work out who the sister, Mrs Kirby was.  It was pointed out to me by someone (I've lost the link) it's a transcription error, Kirby belongs next entry??  Think the info was gleaned from Ellis Island records or ?? and said the sister is Frances McMahon of that NJ address.  Disappointing Frances' departure didn't make the Clare document.  Still hoping a US citizen might see the post.  Cheers  Jim

  • Hi Jim:

Yes, the transcriiptions can be incorrect due to the clarify of the Ellis Island documents.  I wonder if Frances went over under another name -- a nickname?  Are you sure that she went through Ellis Island?  If she emigrated before 1892, she may have gone through Castle Garden.  Did you have a look at that?  I have used the Steve Morse Genealogy website and I have a record here that lists a Frances McMahon born about 1868 who emigrated in 1887.  I know that the date is off but the record is here:  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVPF-2MVN

She listed her age as 19.  It is a stretch from  date of birth of 1877, but it might be worth looking at.  She also stated that she was from Clare.

Let me know what you think.

    All the best,

  • Thank you Jane.  May need further thought, that Frances does look a little old for my line.  My info has Patrick and Anne marrying in 1870 and Frances was baptised on 23 February 1877, witnesses being Thomas and Bridget Morrissey.  If born in 1868 she'd have been a big lump to hold over the font!!  I just assumed Annie and Helena would have "followed" Frances through Ellis Island.  I may be wrong but had no luck searching Castle Garden.
Shame a descendent of Patrick and Anne in Ireland wouldn't pop out of the wood work.  Patrick's brother Thomas came to Australia, which is where I fit in.  We know two of his sisters did too, Mary and Ellen.

  • Hi Jim:

I understand your frustration about not getting further information.  However, all is not lost.  There are others who may see your post and they may be able to add further information.  In addition, if you would create an Ancestor Profile, that can be another valuable avenue for others to see your research and assist.  The link for that is here:  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy.

Keep me posted on your progress and I would recommend that you continue to check the Clare Library website for updates and new source documents that may  become available.

    All the best,

    Jane
