Can you clarify if Margaret was born in England or Ireland? I searched the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  and did not find a marriage record for Patrick and Margaret in Co. Kerry.

Hi Roger, Many thanks for your reply. I’m fairly certain she was born in Ireland but was hoping to find a marriage record to confirm this. So far have had no luck in London records.  I’ve managed to find a death certificate in 1877 for a Margaret Tangney wife of Patrick. However it’s complicated by the fact that I have a census record from 1871 with a Patrick Tangney and his wife Margaret but also 3 step children named Casey one of whom was born in April 1867 whereas my great grandmother was born in November 1867 so I’m wondering if her mother died between 1867 & 1871 and her father then partnered with Margaret Casey (nee O’Brien). This may explain why young Margaret ended up living with her aunt & uncle.  If so the 1877 death may well be the second Margaret. According to the cansus record I have she was born in Ireland. Problem then is that I would then be looking for 2 marriage certificates! Would it have been likely at that time that couples would co-habit without officially marrying?

Since you had the names of the sponsors, I assumed you had a copy of a birth or baptismal record.

www.irishgenealogy.ie has copies of civil birth records from 1864-1916. I  did not find a Margaret Tangney birth recordd around 1867 with parents Patrick and Margaret. The three Margaret records available in the 1860s (with different parent names) were in the area around Killarney so likely your ancestors are from the east side of Co. Kerry. 

I assume some couples in the 19th century co-habited without marrying.
