Hi,
I really hope someone will be able to help. Myself and my mum are trying to trace my grandad Joseph Reidy who was born we believe in Clareabbey in 1899. We have very little information as he died when my mum was very young and all his documents were destroyed. My mum has been trying for years to trace where he and his family came from as she knows very little about her father and his family.
The only document we have is his discharge paper from the Irish republican army. He was enlisted on 1st May 1922 at 23yrs and discharged 12th January 1924. He was a private and his number was 2870.? Portobello barracks, Kilmally.
His D.O.B we believe was 5/3/1899. My mum believes he came over to England as his wife had died and his cattle got foot and mouth.

Any information would be so appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

Alison Reidy.

  • Hi Alison,

there is a two year old Joseph Reidy on the 1901 census that might be the one you are looking for http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Clare/Clareabbey/Lissane_East/1070328/

This is the 1898 birth record of that Joseph -  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/cert_amends…

Here is the same family  in 1911 - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Clare/Clareabbey/Lissan__East/354087/

The parents marriage cert - https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

I hope this is of some use.

  • Hi Jim,

Thank you so much for your help. The information you have provided has added a few more pieces to the puzzle! The only thing I don't understand is the date of birth on the birth certificate. It states his birth as being 17th December 1998 and we were sure from other bits of information we have that he was born 15th March 1899.
    Anyway, thank you once again.

    Alison.

ReidyI have done extensive  research on my line  of McMahons in Co Clare but have reached a few impasses.

John McMahon was born in 1780 Clare and died 18650 Clare.  He married Ellen Moroney born 1785 in Clare and died 1850 in Clare. My impasse here is I cannot find the father and mother  of John McMahon and the mother and fatherof Ellen Moroney.

John and Ellen had 3 children.  My impasse here is that I feel they must have had more but I cannot find them.

The children I have found are:

Patrick McMahon born 1802  Clare and married Mary Reidy (Riedy). They both died in New Jersey. My impasse here is I cannot find the mother and father of Mary Reidy.  Ialso have Reidys in my tree tha tlive in America

Mary McMahon vborn 1805 Dingle and died 1872 in MS USA.  She married Cornelius Rorke born 1801 Dingle and died in 1864 in MS USA.  First I have a real problem here as I wonder how John and Ellen had a child in Dingle. If so, my impasse here is the mother and father of Cornelius Rorke

Michael McMahon born 1813 Kildysart and died in 1868 in Queensland, Australia.  He married Bridget O'Loughlin born in Rilrish Clare and died 1859 in Queensland Australia. My problem here is that Ihave O'Loughlins in another part of my tree but she does not appear to belong to them. Myimpasse isthat Idonotknow her date o fbirth and the names of her parents.

James McMahon born 1824 Black Hills, Kildysart Clare and died in Ballynacally Clare. I do not know the date of his birth. He married Bridget Moran bvorn 1825 in Clonmore Clare. I do not know her date of birth but Bridget is connected to another  line in my tree.

I WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATE IF ANY ONE CAN HELP ME FILL IN THE GAPS.

    Many thanbks
