Searching for ancestors/family from County Sligo.  John and Mary Bridget Boland (nee Kerr) and their children who came to the States in 1860.  Only other information we have is that John's parent's names were William and Mary.  Any advice is greatly appreciated!

  • Do you know what denomination your Boland/Kerr family were ?

I checked the Catholic baptisms available online and did not see any potential baptisms for Boland children to John and Mary Kerr or similar baptised around the right timeframe in County Sligo.  There are children baptised to a number of couples name John Boland with wife named Mary or Bridget in Co. Sligo up to 1861 e.g. Mary Connor, Mary Henly, Mary Howley, Maria Dowd, Bridget Begley and Bridget Reilly but none with a Mary or Bridget Kerr that I could see...

Do you have the names and estimated years of birth for the children ?

Thank you for your research and reply!  Our assumption is that John and Mary Bridget were Catholic, as that has been the families practice in the past few generations here in the States.  I found a ships manifest for John Boland and Mrs. Boland and family that we believe is, in fact, them, sailing from Liverpool to New York, arriving May 11, 1860; and from this, we are deriving their birth years' as:  John Boland 1799; Mary Bridget 1804;  Margaret 1831; Josephine Bridget 1836; Mary 1838; John 1840; Michael 1842; Elizabeth 1846.  We are also, deducing the Parish as Kilfree, as the only thing we have to go on is Mary Bridgets' headstone, which is quite worn, but based on the Parish names for County Sligo, Kilfree seemed to be the only match. I have uploaded a picture of this. Thank you for any advice you can give.

  • Still no success with the baptisms.. several of the names are quite common, and do occur in the area, including some with parents first names John and Mary, but none with mother's maiden surname of Kerr or similar... are you certain about the Sligo connection ? what was the source for this ?

Unfortunately I cant read anything in that photo - appears an attempt might have been made to clean the writing, which is not usually a good idea...

If the parish for your Boland/Kerr family is in fact Kilfree (Kilfree and Killaraght) then unfortunately it's unlikely that any baptism records will be located, as the NLI records for the parish only go back to 1873. The register images are the same set used by FindMyPast and Ancestry to derive their indexes - RootsIrelands (pay-website) has local transcript of these registers, but their baptisms also start in 1873. Marriage records for the parish go back further to 1844, which would seem to be not quite far enough to include a marriage of your John & Mary...

The two commonly used book references for record sources 'Irish Ancestors-John Grenham' and 'Irish Records-James G. Ryan' confirm these dates as the earlier known records for the parish.

I had a look at the earlier marriages in Kilfree and Killaraght) RC parish - and found at least 6 Boland marriages between 1851 and 1875, so the surname was present in the parish at that time, so likely earlier also. I did not find any Kerr marriages in the early registers, although there were a three that could be close match - two Kerins (1870 & 1872) and a Kerris (1846)....

Thank you Shanew147 for all of your research!  We only have family lore for the name of 'Mary' and 'Kerr'.  The evidence for 'Bridget' and County Sligo is her headstone of which I have attached a picture.  I found the ships manifest from 1860 where the family sailed from Liverpool to New York and all of the family names match up, except that she is listed only as 'Mrs.' Boland.  I have also found several American Census for the family that provides the name of Bridget.
