My great grandfather, Michael Reid, married Winifred Gara on 17 January 1877, in St Nathy's Cathedral, Ballaghaderreen.

Michael Reid's father is noted as Lackey Reid, deceased. I am trying to find out if Lackey is an abbreviation for another name as I have never seen it anywhere else. If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

  • Lacky is a nickname for Laurence and Laughlin.
    I hope this is helpful.

  • Hi Patricia

Many thanks for your reply - I had thought of Laughlin but not of Laurence. I had also wondered if it might have come from Malachy as I have seen another record where Malachy is spelled as Malacky. However, this gives me something to go on so thank you.

  • In Roscommon it can be and abbreviation for both Malachy and Loughlin.

This index of variations might help...…
