Hi there, I am seeking to trace my ancestry back to my great great grandma and further back. Her name was Mary Smith. She was born in 1820 in County Meath and married Michael Kain (though his name may have been changed when he emigrated.) I appreciate any help, thanks!

  • Hi There and welcome to Ireland Reaching Out, however there is a problem which you must find often, too many Mary Smiths or Smyth. There are 2 Mary Smiths in Meath in 1820 on Roots Ireland and another 5 Mary Smyth, without a parents name we will not pick the one assuming she is in a parish with records, also do you know the religion as that will narrow the field.

If your year is not totally accurate we have a lot more of them in Meath. There is also on Mary Smith in Louth in 1820, St Marys Parish in Meath is partly in County Louth. I have come across the Kain; Cane; Kane name in mid Louth also from other queries. The name is in the Tithe Applottments 1824 to 1838 for Meath; 15 by Kain; 5 by Cain and 12 Kane so not much help there. This is only those who actually had to pay and paid the tithes.

The reality is I am afraid that without the mothers name we cannot be sure we found the correct Mary and must bear in mind that not all parishes will have records for this period.

Sorry the news is not better,

    Regards

    Pat
