  • IrishlegendsOz:

The baptismal records for Kilteely RC parish start in 1815. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0271    I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and was unable to locate a John Lynch baptismal record with the parents names provided anywhere in Co. Limerick. Likely John was either baptized in Kilteely pre1815 or baptized in another parish that no longer has records back to 1818.

I did find a possible lead for a baptismal record for Bridget Dea in the Kilteely records. The date of baptism was June 10 1820 and her parents were John Dea and Penelope Maher.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Hi Roger

Thanks for the reply. I have researched the Kilteely records with O'Dea family members, as we have all the O'Dea family history, but John Lynch's family are still a mystery.

I have done DNA 2 years ago, and although I found Lynch matches here in Australia, no one emerged in Ireland unfortunately.

A family member here had some suggestion that John Lynch & his father Michael were born in Kilrush, Clare however when I was in Kilteely, the O'Dea family historian, said that in 1840, it would be very unlikely that a girl from Kilteely would be introduced to, or marry someone so far from home. I did find a registration once for a Michael Lynch - see below, but nothing else on this family.

I don't think the death record for Michael Lynch in 1870 is for your Michael Lynch. Kilteely civil parish residents would be part of the Tipperary registration district not Limerick (assuming they died in Kilteely parish).

Also, your original message said that John's parents were John Lynch and Bridget Connell. Your latest message indicates that the father was Michael? In any event, I went back to Roots Ireland looking for Lynch baptismal record where the mother was a Connell and there is an April 17 1819 baptismal record in Kilteely/Dromkeen RC parish for a John Lynch with parents James Lynch and Margaret Connell.

Likely this is not your John but there may be a connection.

    Hi Roger

Thanks for the reply and the hint of the April 17, 1819 baptismal record. Perhaps that is correct, as his death certificate states aged 70 years on 12 November 1889.
I did find another some time ago, and I have attached it below, I cant read the details properly but it is 1818 and at (30) I think it says John of William Lynch publican and ??
I cant read the mothers name, perhaps you can make some light of it.

Yes, I'm sorry I did make a typing error naming Johns father also as John.
When I checked the DC obviously completed by his children as his wife had pre-deceased him, they named his parents as Michael Lynch farmer & Bridget (Connell) of Limerick. Perhaps they did have John's parents names incorrect, which would be understandable as they were born in Australia and wouldn't have know the Irish family.

Interestingly did John and Bridget follow the naming convention for their children ? The eldest son was named Thomas, the second son Michael, and the third son John.
Bridget O'Dea's father's name was John.

  • Janet:

The naming convention would have the first son named after the paternal grandfather so Michael followed by the second son with the name of the maternal grandfather John. Third son named after the father which would have been John also so another name would have been used.

Thomas throws off the naming convention.

The name is very difficult to read. I was not able to come up with a good guess. However, Roots Ireland transcribed the name as Mary and they had access to the actual register rather than a microfilmed copy. Roots Ireland was unable to determine the first name of the first sponsor Hayes.
