Hi all! My great grandfather, Patrick Maurice Sheehy, came to Australia with the rest of his family, arriving in May 1853 on the Ship The Blundell. His father's name is Maurice Sheehy and his mother is Margaret (nee Cosgrove). He also had three siblings who came out with him - Margaret, Mary and Bridget. The family settled in the Pambula/Eden/Boyd Town region of Southern New South Wales. They were part of the Monteagle contingent (and I have used the book Poverty to Promise).

I have located the birth  records for Patrick Maurice Sheehy and his siblings, and the marriage certificate for his parents -  Maurice and Margaret, but there doesn't seem to be any older birth information for this parish (before 1824).

Is there another source anyone can suggest (aside from the Catholic Parish online records)? I can't trace this family further than the above, although I have some possible (unconfirmed) names - Maurice Sheehy's parents (Patrick Sheehy, wife Margaret) and Margaret Cosgrove's parents (Thomas Cosgrove and Margaret Liston). Does anyone have a connection to these names?

Cheerio!

  • Hi Leigh,

Unfortantely there isnt any other sources for births at that early stage . The church records are the earliest records as civil registration did not start until 1864. Another route may be DNA testing, it might help you find other lines.

Best of luck with your research, if I can be of any help please let me know.

  • Hi Leigh,

Can you please publish, on this site, the date of marriage for Maurice SHEEHY & Margaret COSGROVE, and also the batisms for all children of this marriage.

It may be that your Pat. is the same Patrick Sheehy as ours.

    Kind regards,
