dsfThomas Dooley was born on or about 24 March 1915 in Affick, Tulla, County Clare. He left Tulla, by all accounts, to marry. The name of his wife is unknown as are the names of any children although one person local to Tulla believes they had a daughter called Mary.

Thomas was my father's cousin (his mother was my father's aunt).

Thomas had three siblings:

(1) Michael Dooley: he was born on 7 June 1010 in Affick and inherited his father's blacksmith's business. He died on 10 October 1986 at Raheen Community Hospital, County Clare.  He is buried in Tulla Cemetery.

(2) Mary (Mollie) Dooley: she was born on 5 August 1911 at Affick and died on 22 July 1996. She too is buried in Tulla Cemetery. Her house in Main Street Tulla is believed to have been transferred to her by Thomas on his departure from Tulla. Mollie ran the family farm with such help as she could muster from her brothers.

(3) Daniel Dooley: he was born at Affick on 16 February  1913. He is understood to have emigrated to the USA on an unknown date and no more is known about him.

The Dooley siblings' parents were: Thomas Dooley (senior) 1874-1946 and Sarah O'Keeffe (1873-1955) who was born in Stonepark, Ayle, Feakle, County Clare.

I have recently come across a memorial card for Thomas Dooley (Junior) which records that he died on 22 January 2001 at Chapel Hill, Baltinglass, County Wicklow. I would very much like to discover any details about his marriage, his children and his life in Wicklow.  At present he is very much a mystery.

Any help most welcome.

  • The search timeframe is quite recent so any online searches will be limited - most vital records on websites are restricted by the 100/75/50 year rule, e.g. on the free IrishGenealogy website.

Marriages are covered on IrishGenealogy up to 1945 and a search for a possible marriage for Thomas jnr. shows 5 results after 1935, but unfortunately none with a father's named Thomas. Possibly your Thomas married sometime after 1945 ?

The version of the BMD Index on FamilySearch covers up to 1958 for the 26 counties so it's possible to check for possible later matches for the marriage there, and their version of the births index includes mother's maiden surname from about 1929, which can help locate probable births for any children to Thomas if your can find his wife's maiden surname. .

It looks like his wife's surname is probably Rowe, and they seem to have married in 1951.. have a look at the FamilySearch index. You can use the references (quarter, district, volume & page) from the index to order research certs from the GRO to confirm the details, or drop in to the GRO research room in Dublin to check later indexes and collect certs.

  • It's almost the anniversary since your very helpful reply, for which I now thank you, and I don't want that date pass without updating you with my findings.  I have searched the FamilySearch site  and it appears that Thomas and his wife  ? Rowe (I still do not know his wife's first name) had four children between the date of their marriage in 1951 and 1958 (the year FamilySearch's records cease). These were:

    Thomas J Dooley born July-Sep 1952

    Brendan P Dooley born April-June 1954

John A Dooley born 1955 (no quarter given)

    Mary B Dooley born July-Sept 1958

All were born in Baltinglass.  The inclusion of a daughter Mary helps to confirm that this is the right family. There may of course be further children born post 1958.  I have yet to apply for a full birth certificate of one of the above children but I shall now proceed to do so to confirm matters further and hopefully to learn Mrs Dooley's first name.  Many thanks again for pointing me  in the right direction.
