I'm trying to flesh out the family of Thomas DOYLE and Rose ROGERS of Columbkille (or possibly Clonbroney). So far, sources including a Search in Census Return 1841 or 51 (William DOYLE, applicant, 1910), the Columbkille Parish registers, the Emigrant Savings Bank (of New York) Test Books, and various US census records and bmd certificates indicate the following:

Thomas DOYLE and Rose ROGERS both likely born c.1805-10, married in 1826. Most if not all of their children born after 1837 emigrated to the US in the 1860s and possibly 1870s and settled in New York City or in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Thomas DOYLE emigrated as well by 1880 and died in Mercer County, PA, in 1886. He also seems to have had an older brother, Bartholomew DOYLE (c1798-1868), who emigrated with his first wife and a few children (including William and Patrick) c1831 and settled in New York City. Griifith's Valuations of 1855 show Thomas DOYLE in Rosduff, Columbkille, but most of the baptism records - as well as another Griffith's that I can't seem to date - have the family in Aghamore in the parish of Clonbroney.

The known children of Thomas DOYLE and Rose ROGERS (with known godparents in parentheses) are:

William DOYLE born c1832

Mary DOYLE
baptized: 01 Apr 1837 Columbkille (James REILLY, Catherine RODGERS)

Ann DOYLE
baptized: 26 Aug 1843 Columbkille (John McMANUS, Margaret KANE)
residence: Ahemore

James DOYLE
born: May 1844-Apr 1845? emigrated 1863?

Any additions or corrections to this long-winded post would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located the marriage record for the couple in Mullinalaghta parish also known as Lough Gowna. Below is a trancription for the record from the subscription site Roots Ireland. As you can see both Thomas and Rose were from Lough Gowna. This RC parish borders Columkille to the east. I think this record rules out William Doyle as a son of this couple. Roots Ireland had eight baptismal records for children of Thomas Doyle and Rose Rodgers. There were as follows and all were baptized in Columbkille Mary 1837 Patrick 1839 Ann 1843 Bartholomew 1846 Catherine 1848 John 1851 Thomas 1853 Michael 1856  Likely James and Charles were not children of Thomas and Rose.

Now the question is which Aghamore townland did theu live in. As you mentioned, there is a Thomas Doyle in Aghamore townland in Clonbroney civil parish https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/longford/clonbroney.htm  and although Columbkille civil parish has Doyles there is no Thomas living in Aghamore in the parish. https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/longford/columbkille.htm   In my view, however, I think your family was from Columbkille parish for two reasons. There was an RC parish of Clonbroney so you would think the younger children would have been baptized in that church if living in Clonbroney civil parish. Second, the baptismal record you have from Ancestry for Patrick shows Aghamore Upper which is in Columbkille parish.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Thanks, Roger:

I've been trying to absorb it all and go over my notes more carefully. Here is some follow-up information:

James Doyle appears in the Emigrant Savings Bank Test Books (of New York) in 1866:

    ----
    James DOYLE or brother Patrick
residence: 308 West 27th St. [address of Bartholomew DOYLE]
    occupation: Laborer
    James born 1844 / Patrick born 1840
    where born: Co Longford Ireland
    James arrived 1863
    Patrick arrived 1860 per “Panama”
    Father: Thos. Mother: Rose ROGERS

    ----

And then in 1870 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania:

    ----

Pat DOYLE, 24, Laborer, b. Ireland
Anna DOYLE, 19, keeps house, b. Ireland
Bartley DOYLE, 26?, Laborer, b. Ireland
James DOYLE, 25, Laborer, b. Ireland
    https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DZ8H-VL?i=173&cc=14380…

    ----

But that's not much to go on - and I can't definitely say what happened to James afterward.

Patrick, by the way, shows up a few times in the test books and in one of them it says he's from "Granard Longford Ireland" - if that makes any difference.

And there's a promising candidate for Rose which I probably should pursue:

    Name    ROSE DOYLE
    Date of Death    1867
    Group Registration ID    N/R
    SR District/Reg Area    Longford
    Deceased Age at Death    56
    Returns Year    1867
    Returns Quarter    3
    Returns Volume No    13
    Returns Page No    136

  • Ian:

Roots Ireland has the Columbkille baptismal records starting in 1833, however, the parish register on the NLI for Columbkille has records starting in 1845. I was hoping you could scan the parish register for a James Doyle record but you won't have that opportunity.

On death records, the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie has death record images starting in 1878 until 1966. They do have plans to add the records back to 1864 but we don't have any firm dates. I don't believe the record you located is for your Rose Doyle. Death records are filed by registration districts and Co. Longford has three registration districts-- Longford, Ballymahon and Granard. Your family would be in the Granard registration district and the index record you located is in the Longford district so likely another Rose Doyle.

  • Thanks for the tip regarding Rose. And it's certainly maddening that there are so many gaps in the registers!
