Good day to you.

We are researching our Great Grand Father (Mother side) Thomas Joseph Doran.

We hold the following information on Thomas by way of U.S. Federal Census, Newspaper Clippings and Oral History.

Thomas was born 12 March 1850, in County Mayo, Ireland. I am not sure what town or parish.  Two of Thomas's Granddaughters informed us they visited Doran Family members in County Mayo many years ago, thus our County Mayo conclusion.  He emigrated to the United States in the Summer of 1870, and resided in Pittston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA. Thomas was employed as a Coal Miner.

Thomas married Mary Ellen Corcoran (b. 1853 in Ireland) @ 1871 in Pittston City, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA.  Shortly after the marriage they moved to Avoca (formerly known as Pleasant Valley), Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA. Thomas remained employed as a coal miner.

Thomas and Mary Ellen had Six Children: William, Ellen (Nellie) James, Thomas, Frank and Edward.  All children were born in Avoca, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA.

Thomas died in Avoca, Pennsylvania 31 March 1900.  His wife Mary Ellen died in Avoca, Pennsylvania 14 November 1888.

Parents: Patrick Doran and Honora Ann Smith.  We believe Thomas had three brothers: Lewis b. @ 1836, Charles b. @ 1848 and Edward b. @ 1845 all born in Ireland.  Lewis (could be Lewis Patrick Doran).  Charles, Lewis and Thomas all emigrated to the United States. Possibly Lewis and Thomas Emigrated together.  We hold no information on Edward.  All three brothers Thomas, Charles and Lewis resided in the North Eastern part of Pennsylvania, Luzerne County, USA. Thomas lived in Avoca, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania and Charles and Lewis lived in Duryea, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Regards,

Leo J Walsh, Jr.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland for all of Ireland for Doran baptismal records where the father was Patrick Doran and the mother's maiden name was Smith/Smyth. No records came up. If they were from Mayo then many of the RC parishes do not have records back to the 1830s/1840s. I did check the 1855-1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Mayo. I was hoping to find a Patrick Doran but there were only five Doran records and none were Patrick. See below. All five records were in Kilcommon parish which is a very large parish in West Mayo. Possibly, your Thomas was from that parish. Only one of the four RC parishes in that area have records back to the 1840s-- Belmullet 1841.

It is unfortunate that the grandaughters of Thomas did not leave info on where in Mayo they located Doran relations.

Let me know what questions you have.
