Hello!

I am currently looking for the marriage of Thomas Lee and Catherine Connell, married approx 1887/1888 in Aghabog RC chapel. The year of marriage may be wrong, but 1887 and 1888 is what is recorded on subsequent children's birth certificates born in Scotland in the late 1890's.

Thomas Lee, parents Thomas Lee and Mary Lee (maiden name not known)

Catherine Connell, possible parents Francis Connell and Elizabeth Argue, but this needs confirmation.

Thank you!

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not locate a marriage record for Thomas and Catherine in Co. Monaghan. ( I looked at all of Ireland for a possible civil record). Did you check for a marriage record in Scotland?

This may be the baptismal record for Catherine.

  • Hi

    Thank you for your reply!

Yes, I have the baptismal record and the marriage of Elizabeth Argue and Francis Connell at Scotshouses. I had looked everywhere for the marriage of Catherine and Thomas  online. If I have the marriage then I'm hopeful I can confirm that this is her parents. Catherine is my GG Grandmother.

It would be a bit strange for them to have married in Scotland, as their first children were born in Monaghan - I have all the records for them.

I intend to visit Ireland, including Monaghan in January, for the purposes of family history, so hoping I will find out more then. Would Clones Library have Church records?

    Thanks

    Catherine

  • Dear Catherine:

Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

Your best bet is to stop into the Clones Library and to look for Caitriona Lennon who works there.  They have a very good local history section.  I am not aware of whether or not they have parish registers but I do know that the National Library has the parish registers online for many parishes in County Monaghan.  Ematris parish  can be accessed here:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0307

You mentioned that the first child born to Thomas & Catherine was born in Monaghan.  If that is the case, have you checked the Irish Genealogy website for a marriage record?  You may need to look outside the Monaghan area due to some transcription errors in the uploading of the records.

I will forward notice of your trip to Caitriona Lennon and I will also include her email address in this post if you would like to contact her directly.  Please let me know if you need anything further.

Here is some information about the collection that may assist you:

Have a wonderful trip and please keep us posted as to your progress.

    Kind regards,

    Jane
