I am looking for Irish information on my great great maternal grandfather Thomas Sommerville Morrow and his parents Thomas Morrow and Ann Tamblyn. Thomas Sommerville was born in or near Ballintra, Donegal County circa 1833 - 1836. Thomas Sommerville had 3 brothers, William, Andrew and George and possibly ??? a sister Margaret. Thomas Sommerville immigrated to Canada when he was 17 years old ( 1850 - 1853). His brothers followed a few years later. William the oldest immigrated with his wife Margaret Harron (from Muvagh). The Morrow's settled in Bruce County, Arran Township, Ontario, Canada. Thomas Sommerville married Ruth Warnock in 1858, and homesteaded near Arran Lake in Arran Township. Thomas and Ruth had 8 children. Thomas died March 1918.

All of this information comes from Canadian Census and marriage records and a family letter written by one of Thomas Sommervilles sons, William (Bill) Morrow in 1967, in which he states that Ballintra is where his father was born.

I am looking for Irish docmentation for the Morrow's in or around Ballintra, including birth, marriage ( brother William Morrow or father Thomas and Ann) or death records, or where Thomas Morrow ( my great, great, great grandfather) and Ann Tamblyn could be buried. The Morrow's were protestants in Canada, so I assume the same in Ireland. If possible I would like to find out which protestant cemetery they could be buried in.

I have found a Thomas Morrow listed in Griffiths Valuation (1856-62) as a tenant on Lot 37 just outside of Ballintra, but have no idea if it is the same Morrow family. Would be interested in finding out if there are still Morrow's in Ballintra.

Any help, assistance or advise would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Greg Sannes

If you have a look in the Irish phone book www.118.ie/ you'll find 4 Morrows in Ballintra (search Morrow Ballintra)

  • Col,

Wow ! That is great news ! Thanks very much for the quick reply.  This information confirms what family information I have, with more accurate baptismal dates.

I am also trying to find out where my 3X great grandparents ( Thomas Morrow and Ann Morrow (Tamblyn) lived in Ballintra; address or property/lot description, and hopefully what cemetery they may be buried in. Are there online protestant burial or cemetery records for Drumhome / Rockhill, or perhaps civil records ?  Other suggested sources or directions for research are most welcome.

I hope to visit Ireland / Donegal / Ballintra in a few years, so whatever I can find out before hand would be great.

Once again, thanks very much for your effort and prompt reply.

    Cheers,

    Greg Sannes

  • Col,

One other follow-up on what you provide. I noticed the Thomas record is repeated twice. Was there perhaps a George or Andrew baptismal record ?

    Thanks,

    Greg

  • Thankyou again Col. Interesting the possible additional siblings for my 2X grandfather that you have provided Baptism information for. Alexander and Isaac are new names to me. I note that one brother Andrew is missing from the list you provided. Also is the Ballymagrorty Parish noted for three of the siblings a close alternative to Ballintra - Rockhill Parish, or does it mean the family lived and farmed somewhere of than Ballintra ?

    Thank you,

    Greg

I'm not a Donegal expert so won't try to answer your queries about the parishes; have a look for a Drumhome parish on the site as they should know.
