hi,

I am looking for more information that connects our Thompson family to Clements, Lindsay, Roe and Coleburne families all living adjacent to our Thompsons. They lived there for most of the 19th century. Also wishing to know more of George Henry Hirst who lived with his aunt, Anne Roe, nee Thompson 1890 -1910. George was born in England.

Many thanks, Dennis Thompson

  • Hi Dennis

I found my ancestor in the remnants of the 1821 census, in an adjoining townland to Ballinree - Fortel.  I don't find them or any relatives there in the Griffiths Valuations.   The name was Parland or Parlane.

  • Hi Karen,  my apologies for such a slow reply. I found Thomas Thompsons in Dromoyle in the 1821 Census but they seemed to have moved to Ballinree in the Griffiths Valuations.  From that I guess you might assume that families  did move about and eeapecially with the famine. In that regard, I am not sure how gravely affected the Birr area was. Do you know anything of that ?

  • My ancestors came from Ballinree.

    The Lindsay's.

In the shown Valuation of Tenements their is an Anne Clements listed.

She was born Lindsay in 1797. She had a brother, John Lindsay who is my third great grandfather.

  • Hi John,

Thanks for that. There was a lot tieing in the Lindsay’s, Clements, Colbourne and Thompson families during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Re Anne Lindsay, I have her  married to John Clements. Is that your understanding.?

Clements house on the left, the Thompson house on the right.

John was the brother of William Clements who was married to my GG Grandmother Susan Colbourne. William and Susan’s last child together was born in 1834. Susan then had 4 children to my GG Grandfather Thomas Thompson, one of them my GGrandfather, Thomas Thompson who emigrated here to NZ.

I visited Ballinree in 2017 and 2019 and learnt some more about exactly where my Thompson’s lived - down a pretty lane and across a small stream. See my attached photo.

The Clements and my Susan Colbourne lived there from at least the time of the 1821 Census. My Thompson’s moved from Dromoyle near Cree to nearby Ballinree. Sometime after the 1821 Census and before the Griffiths Valuation. The Clements and Thompson’s continued to live there until the first 20 years of the 20th century.

I have had a wee bit of trouble locating where my Susan Colbourne and Thompson’s were buried. The Clonoghill Cemetery records were a bit sparse when I visited. How have you gone with sourcing burial information related to your Lindsays ?

I have a tree on Ancestry of you are interested,

    cheers,

  • Yes, you are correct. Anne Lindsay married John Clements.

They lived with the Lindsay's as shown in the 1821 census fragments.

Anne's brother John, born in 1800 are my ancestors.

I am trying to determine if all of the Lindsay's listed in that census are related.

My guess is that they are.

It appears that in the Griffith's Valuations that Anne Clements is listed as well as

Giffith Clements. John may have passed on by 1855.

John and Anne's brother Samuel was married three times and died in Birr (Parsonstown)

according to Ireland Civil Registration Indexes.

And, yes I would be interested in your family tree as it may give us clues to any

    related family.
