Hi, I have a group of Thompsons - Thomas’ living at House 36 (?) Dromoyle. They were all called Thomas - a Head of House, a son and a grandson. Based on their 1821 ages they would have each been born about 1749, 1793 & 1805. There is one additional grandson that I am interested in. He was listed there and his name was John Lynch born abt 1816 . No listing for his parents though. I have found a Marriage Licence Bond details from the National Archive of a Jonathan Lynch and Mary A Thompson from Killaloe Diocese in 1814. I suspect these are the parents of John Lynch.  I would like to know more of them but have been unable to find much else except for another possible connection: a Bridget Lynch 8 yrs old in 1821 working as a servant girl for a Hindsey family at “ Leap or Knock”. Is this one location or two ? Any more information on any of this would be very helpful.

Best regards, Dennis Thompson

    Hi Dennis  . . . Welcome to I.R.O. . .

and to Roscrea Town in Co.Tipperary. . ans a few miles from Leap Castle ( in Kings Co ). . . now referrred to as Offaly County . . and a private house (still in full use ) called Knock . .

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_Castle

    (see map below)

The red pointer . . indicates Leap Castle  . .

to the left of that marker . . you will see the figure ' 640 '. . .

    below 640 . . before the road . . there is a black dot . . indicating a house . . I believe this to be known as Knock House. . .

In a random search of the surrname Hinsey . . in the Roscrea and surrounds district . . (see below) . .

Researching around the area of Roscrea (the Town) . . is tricky . . because. . .     three County boundries . . meet at this area . . . Birr to Roscrea is 12 miles

    A personal observation . . . I haven't delved in to the " Thompson " family of names . . you appear to have researched them fairly well . . .

    Come back to me . . if . . a spacific question arises . . .

    Census (1821) . . . below . . does show Brid.Lynch (8) . . . district ...Leap . . Knock . . . Knock may refer to the hill district above Leap Castle . . .

That . . for now is what I have found  .. . I do hope it adds to your sum of knowledge . . .

    Cheers . . Eamonn.    Roscrea.

    Further Search . . Griffiths Valuation . . . tax roll from 1845 - 1865 . .

The first two Thompsons . . . would indicate their domicile . . Ballinree and Clonoghill Upper . . .as being the nearest to Leap Castle estate and lands . .

    the last two . . would indicate Townships , , further North . . .

    ____________________________________

    Searching " Roots Ireland " . . .(a pay for site) . . . I brought up the Census of 1821 . . . with the following results . . .

    Thompson (1) . . indicates. . .  All 4. . . Thomas Thompsons. . . recorded for Kings Co.

Thompson (2) . . is highlighting the first one on the list . . . See Thompson (3)

    THOMPSON (4) . . is YOUR family . . + Lynch

    Next line is a copy of the above (4) . . . as is the last line . . . .

    Hope this helps . . . Cheers . . .Eamonn.

Thank you Eamonn for your help. I came across this for Knock House - http://webgis.buildingsofireland.ie/HistoricEnvironment/?REG_NO=14938020

If that is the house you are referring to it must have replaced an earlier house as this house was built around 1880. I might check with the Valuation Office in Dublin to het a better idea.  Louisa.Nolan@VALOFF.IE

I  will get back to you with more questions but for now thank you.
