Hi, insearch of my grandfather Patrick Frederick or Frederick Patrick "Young" goes by the nickname Paddy - go figure. I think born around 1919/1920 in Ireland died very young about 1967-1974(???) Not sure if in Canada or Ireland

I am told that he came to Picton Ontario btwn 1941-1946 to Camp Picton or Mountainview, Ontario with the RAF, and was a mechanic - not sure if on planes or trucks.

Had an affair with my grandmother which begate my mother. Also told that he registered her birth with his family in Ireland.  His mothers name was Margaret. When he past away his mothers solicitor sent a letter to my mother (dont have the letter any more) stating that since she was the first born of the first born, she would inherit the family property but would need to pay the taxes on it. I am assuming then that it was a significant amount of property.

I am not sure if it was from my great grandmother - Margaret's side, or the paternal Young side. My parents couldnt afford the taxes and I think it went to next in line or back to the crown.... I have been told that the property was in a small village on the outskirts of Ireland.

I am looking for anything on this person. I have no other details.

  • Wiggy,

There are restrictions in Ireland on accessing deaths within the past 50 years on-line. The records are publicly available but you just can’t search for them on-line. And the matter is further complicated by the fact that there are separate records for Northern Ireland and for the Republic of Ireland, so you have two sets to search.

I would start by contacting GRONI (for Northern Ireland) and then GRO Roscommon (for the Republic) and ask them to search for the death. Mention the approximate year of birth as that should help narrow the search. There will be fees to pay.

    GRONI: https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/contacts/contacts-az/general-register-office-northern-ireland

    GRO Roscommon: https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

From what you say, Patrick obviously had property in Ireland. Even if he died in Canada, there is likely to be a probate file in Ireland, dealing with the assets in Ireland. That should be in either Belfast or Dublin. If probate was granted in Northern Ireland then it should be with PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast.  Probate abstracts and wills, post 1966 are not on-line. You would need to either get a researcher to go there and look the wills up, or pay PRONI to do that for you. PRONI:

If probate was granted in the Republic of Ireland, then the file should be in the National Archives in Dublin. They have probate files up to 1982. Again it will involve either getting someone to go there, or paying NAS for searching and copying.

Patrick should have an RAF service record. That will still be held by the Ministry of Defence in London. See this link for further information on how to access it:

  • Thank you Elwyn for all the great information.

The probate files in Dublin is probablly where I will start first. I have already been in contact with the British High Commission regarding his service records but since I cannot prove that he is my grand father then I am not a next of kin, and I do not have his service records. - so that is a dead end for me.

Again, thank you for the links and help
