Hi, I am looking for information on James Tymons born, 1838, who immigrated to South Australia, Australia in 1858. He and his wife Mary (believe her maiden name was Howlett) arrived here on 1 Feb 1858. James & Mary arrived aboard the ship "Stamboul" which left Plymouth on 24 Oct 1857 with Captain I.A. Smith. James was listed as a Labourer from Clare and they were 20 years of age. Mary died shortly after arriving and James went on to marry Honorah Blake and have eight children : Patrick, John, Kate, James, Mary, Margaret, Lilian & Norah. They lived in Waterfall Gully and Adelaide, South Australia. Hoping to find out more about James and his family in Clare, Ireland. Think his father's name was John and may have had a brother also named John. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Dear Toole:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to te site!

The Clare Library website is a good place to look for any information and you will find a number of great sources for further research.  The website link is below:

Taking a very quick look at the Griffith's Valuation list of surnames from 1855, I note that the surname Tymons is located in 2 places:  Kilrush and Drumcliff, Ennis.

    http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/griffiths/griffitht2.htm

Both listings refer to a James Tymons and it may be a good place to start.  The parish registers for Drumcliff are online through the Ennis parish website.  Their link is below:

Even though the parish registers only begin in 1841, they are still worth a look for the family name.

The Kilrush parish registers are available for free through the National Library of Ireland.  The website link is below:

    https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634783#page/1/mode/1up

You will note that those registers only begin in 1827 and they do have a number of gaps.  In addition, if you have difficulty finding information, you might take a look at the surrounding parish registers, which may often contain baptism records for the family.

You commented that James' wife was Mary Howlett.  This is an unusual name for County Clare, and I note that the only Howlett is Rev. Hugh B. Howlett who is noted in the Newtown townland of the civil parish of Drumcreehy.  It is possible that Mary was not a Catholic, and that James and Mary might have married in a Church of Ireland locally.  If that is the case, you may want to research the Church of Ireland records for Ballyvaughan which are listed under the parish of Rathbourney and held at the RCB Library in Dublin.  You can make enquiries there.

You also mentioned that you believe that your ancestor James Tymons' father was John.  If that is the case, you may be able to find a civil death record for him (if he died after 1864) on the Irish Genealogy website.  You can search for free below:

If you have any questions about the above, please feel free to contact me directly and I will assist you further.  My direct email address is:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.

The very best of luck with your research.  Please consider creating an Ancestor profile for James Timmons and his wife, Mary on the XO Chronicles tab located at the top of this page.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
