I am wondering if church records still exist for Eastwell, North Loughrea, County Galway and any other archival materials for the family.

I descend from John Ussher, born 19 Jul 1806 to John Ussher and Mary Street. I would love to see the sights of the Ussher family.

We will be there in early July 2018.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I found an Eastwell in KillallaghtanKillallaghten civil parish but I also found an 1826 Tithe listing which shows a John, James and William Usher in Eastwell Kilgerrill civil parish. Kilge.rrill parish is northeast of Killallaghtan parish.  http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?…

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilgerrill parish does show a number of Usher records (although William appears to have had numerous properties). None show Eastwell but possibly the Eastwell shown in 1826 was subsumed into another townland when townland names were standardized in 1851.

The Griffiths for Killallaghten parish also shows a Christopher and Thomas Usher in Eastwell

I assume your ancestors were Church of Ireland. This link provides info on the availability of C of I records Many of the C of I church records were destroyed in the 1922 Public Records Office fire in Dublin.

I did not find John on the Roots Ireland data base.

I checked the 1901 census for Eastwell Killaghtan parish and there were two Ussher/Usher families. One of them had a huge house.

  • thanks Roger,

William Arland Ussher in the 1901 is my branch - he is the great-grandson of my ancestors John Ussher and Mary Street.

Yes, I am fairly sure they were Church of England.

Thank you for the links to the Tithe listings.

I would love to see the remains of the Eastwell House when we are there. Are they open to the public?

  • Hi Andrea-The Usshers of Eastwell,Cappataggle are a renowned East Galway family. The Ussher lands have been divided up between the local farmers. The foundations of the "big house" are still visible and most of the Yard& Stables remain intact. They are located about 2 miles from Kilreekill just off the old N6.There is no problem with access.

I will be glad to meet you and provide you with any further info. of which there is quite a lot.

  • Thanks both to Roger and Liam,

I did find the YouTube video and other links but didn't want to blunder onto someone's private land.

I have done considerable research on the the Usshers in Canada, being descended from the second son that didn't inherit, and I know the bare bones of their story in Ireland. It will be amazing to see the land in person.

thank you Liam for your kind offer. I will send you an email when we have our travel plans a little more organized.

  • Hello Andrea, My grandfather, George William Augustus Ingham, was related to the Usshers of Eastwell. He had the 9 page will of Christopher Ussher, of Eastwell, which I donated to the National Archives in Dublin many years ago. I have been collecting documents, pictures, and other information on the Eastwell Usshers for years. My friend, Joan Ussher Sharkey and I visited with Kathleen Browne, at the Brackenstown Estate, a couple of years before she died. She had a number of pictures of the Eastwell Estate (the only ones to survive at that time; thanks to Joan, they are now availble). Both Joan and I published accounts of our visit with Kathleen (she was related to Harry Ingham Ussher, the great horse trainer). Anyway, I would be happy to share what I know.

  • Hello Andrea I too am direct descendent of John Ussher and Mary Street. My grandmother was Margret Ussher from Buffalo NY and my grandfather Henry Mallory did an extensive genealogy in 1958 of the Ussher family. I am thrilled to have found your search and last years trip to Eastwell House as I have just started to plan a trip... trying to schedule for November. Your YouTube was wonderful and the links from others so helpful. I stared to plan this trip about 15 years ago but my mother’s ailing health prevented me from going. The internet connection is so helpful, just wish my mother was still here to see how incredibly helpful the internet can be. Can you help me connect to some of the places you went and stayed? My email address is acheney@gmavt.net Thank you Alice
