My family and I are coming to visit from Australia in September. We will spend 2 weeks in Ireland, then 1 week in Isle of Man. I've been loving tracing my family history since my DNA results last year, which show me as being 88% Ireland & Scotland with focus areas of North Munster, North Tipperary, North West Clare and Leinster. Both my maternal and paternal lines are mostly Irish and Manx and i'd love to visit places significant to my ancestors whilst in Ireland.

In particular i'm hooked on trying to find more information on my paternal 3rd great grandparents Christopher Fox (abt 1800 d.unknown) and Margaret Byrne b.1806 d.1881 in AU). Their marriage took place in Philipstown (Daingean) on 4th Nov 1836 and I believe they lived somewhere around Killeigh. They had children Bridget (who came to AU and married), Michael (my 2nd great grandfather who married Rose Reilly in AU), Mary and Hanoria.

I believe Rose Reilly was from Westmeath/Meath, her father was Patrick Reilly and her mothers name was Mary Hearnes.

I've tried to trace the church that Christopher and Margaret may have been married in, but haven't been able to pinpoint it. As I don't have any death details for Christopher I don't know where he is buried either. When Margaret came to Australia in 1866 with Michael, she was listed as a widow. Her last child Hanoria was born in 1847 so I am assuming Christopher died somewhere between 1847 and 1866. My goal is at least to drive through Offaly and visit Daingean.

I'm also interested in my Comerford line from Kilkenny. My 3rd great grandfather Michael Comerford (b. 1827 d.1887) was baptised at Windgap, Kilkenny, Ireland. He married Anastasia Kennedy (b. 1829 d.1904) and their children were Alice, William, Edmond and Catherine. The parish records I have state Donemagan in the Diocese of Ossory.

William (my 2nd great grandfather) married Mary Treacy from Raheen, Dunnamaggan, Co Kilkenny and they came to Australia. We plan to visit and stay in Kilkenny and have a look around.

On my maternal side I have Oates, Murphy and Lloyd from Tipperary, Kennedy from County Wexford, Quinn and McClusky from Bellymena Antrim. The rest of my maternal side are Gawne's from the IOM (Ballaugh) or others from England.

We intend to stay in Dublin for 3 days (2 nights) then hire a car and set off on our adventure. I haven't booked our accomodation yet but at the moment we plan to go from Dublin to Kilenny (2 nights), then Cork (2 nights) Galway (3 nights), and lastly Killeigh (2 nights) before returning to Dublin to catch our flight to Douglas. We will be able to travel around from our accomodation to places of interest each day and i've been looking into the must see places to visit in the time we have.

I'd dearly appreciate any ideas or feedback to help us maximise our visit to Ireland. We can't wait!!

  • I think I may have responded to an earlier post of yours about the Foxes in Daingean (mentioning that my own great-grandfather was born there in 1836) , but in case it was someone else's request which I'm remembering, and any of this info is news to you:

Christopher (Christy) and Margaret's marriage record from the parish register in Daingean can be found in the National Library of Ireland's Digitized Parish Registers on Microfilm 04202/09, at image 202, which you can reach at this link:  https://registers.nli.ie/pages/vtls000634545_202

Since weddings uisually took place in the bride's parish, it's likely that Margaret's family was from Daingean.  Killeigh is actually the parish to the southwest of Daingean/Philipstown, and it also has a townland named Killeigh in it.  If that's where they later lived, then that may havee been Christopher's home parish.

The baptismal records for Killeigh only go back to 1844, which may be too late to find baptismal records for their children Bridget and Michael, .  If they lived in Daingean, however, the records there go back much further, and it should be possible to locate the children.  If you find their records, they may indicate the townland in which the family lived.  Their baptismal records (if in Daingean) would be on the same microfilm roll as the wedding of their parents:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0723

Although the baptismal records in Daingean go back to 1795, there's a gap from 1799-1819, which would unfortunately include the years of birth for Christopher and Margaret which you mentioned

Actually, this is all starting to sound very familiar, so I'll just add that you can find more info about the townland of Killeigh at this link:  https://www.townlands.ie/offaly/geashill/killeigh/killeigh/

  • Hi Margot,

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my message.

I've relied a lot of my cousins research for these parts of my tree but I have:

My 4th great grandfather was Jonathon Oates b.1806. He married Ellenor Kennedy and they had sons John b.1826 (married Maria Carney) and my 3rd great grandfather Patrick b.1822 who married Mary Meehan b.1826. They all came to Australia where Patrick and Mary had children Phillip, Ellen, Daniel and John (my 2nd great grandfather).

The Lloyd's are a bit harder for me as they're more widespread and disjointed. It's actually my Lloyd side that links me to Ned Kelly the bushranger :) He was my 1st cousin 4th removed.

As for the Gawnes, our cousin has researched them quite estensively to Ballaugh, Michael, Isle of Man. He's visited a few times and been to the graves of our ancestors. I look forward to doing the same.
