Hi,

I replied to a message from 2016 in case the posters there get notified - but posting anew here as that was an old post!!

Reaching out a bit here!

The information that I know is:

  • William Franklin and Catherine Meany are Married in Dungarvan 23 Sep 1860
  • William is listed as being 55 years old in 1901 (abt. 1846) on his death record (is there a more formal cert that lists his parents names?)
  • William is listed in 1901 Census as being aged 60 (abt. 1841)

From the above I find a possible match, given proximity, for William Franklin born 31 Jan 1843 in Cahir which makes him 17 1/2 when married, is that a bit young, should I look for an older William? There are some Limerick births a bit earlier.

If he is the 1843 William then:

His parents are William Franklin & Margaret O'Donnell (children: John 1839, Patrick 1841, William 1843, Thomas 1845). William may have re-married to Mary Carroll (children: Catherine 1849, Michael 1850, Ellen 1853, Brigid 1856, Hugh 1860) - this could be 2 different William Franklins as I have no matching death cert for Margaret but the children's dates and birth locations make sense for 2 marriages and there is a Mary Franklin who died in Dungarvan in 1866 aged 50, a widow, could be second wife.

One thing that throws me off the above track is that Anne Mary Franklin (30), Daughter of William Franklin (a soldier) marries in Dungarvan in Nov 1873. This could be an extended family member as I can't find a suitable match for a William Franklin having a daughter of that name and a son called William. Nearest is a Mary Anne Wicklow birth in 1840. Is there a second William Franklin in Dungarvan at that time?

William Franklin snr could be born in 19th April 1816 in Cahir parents could be John Franklin & Catherine English .... very speculative.

I'd love to be able to cross reference this, or at least refute.

I have done a DNA test on Ancestry (username Afewgenes) so maybe we can find a connection that way to Franklin and maybe Donnell and English ancestors?  Gedmatch # SG4747476

Cheers

  • Hi Jane,

Following up as I have not heard from anyone on this.

I am still none the wiser with respect to the origin of my William Franklin and even knowing that I am barking up the wrong tree here will help me :)

    Regards

  • Paul.

I have attempted to respond to your query on a number of occasions , but in my opinion your query is too openended to have any defined answers. One standard recomendation  is that you must start fron a 'known present state' ie some known relative of yourself and expand backward and forward from that known position.

I have attached records for three generations of  William Franklin from Cahir ,if you can establish any connections to this family I may be able to identify other relevant records relating to this family.

    Regards,

    Thomas Hussey (native of Cahir)

  • Hi Thomas,

Thanks for getting back to me - hopefully I'll be able to use the information to help me out :)

The paper trail of what I do know for certain of my family starts with the marriage of William in 1860 in Dungarvan so I applied a bit of conjecture regarding his origins to test against to see what sticks. The birth date and location make sense but without further evidence either way it remains as a possibility - I have one other lead to follow which looks even less likely but you never know!

What I do know, which I will summarise here in case it leads to a new piece of info from a reader, is:

    • William Franklin RC, A Soldier, marries Mary Hannigan 6 Feb 1858 st Marys Dungarvan, witnesses Patrick Ryan, Catherine Roche (He may be unrelated!)
    • My William Franklin married Catherine Meaney in Dungarvan, 23 Sept 1860, witness James Power, Honor Neville (Is he a son of the William above?)
    • William & Catherine have a child - William Franklin, b. 26 Aug 1861 Dungarvan, Informant: Brigid Franklin, This William later moves to Clonmel and has his family there.
    • Mary Franklin at age 50 dies in 1866 in Dungarvan, informed by Mary Anne Franklin (Is this the same Mary that was married above?)
    • Mary Anne Franklin marries John Mulligan in Dungarvan 29 Nov 1873 (possibly the same Mary Anne that reported Mary Franklin's death)
    • William is aged 55 on the death record in 1901 and aged 60 on 1901 Census - DOB range is 1841 - 1846 hence speculating on 1843 ...

    Regards

  • HI, May I join in the party?  I am also descendant from the Franklins listed in the pdf attached and working on my Geneology.  I would very much like to find present day descendants so that I may correspond with distant cousins.

Hope all are safe and well in these turbulent times.

  • Hi Jeanne!

I haven't found a definitive link yet to the Franklin line I refer to here - it is quite possible but not certain as the paperwork runs out for me.

I think that my best chance is to find DNA matches that link in - there are quite a few DNA matches I have identifed linking to William Franklin abt 1840 but not back further unfortunately ...

If you would like to see if there is something that we can wortk out then feel free to contact me on thisisourdna at gmail dot com

    Cheers

  • Hi Paul,

I am directly descended from the Franklins reference in the attachment but as of yet do not find any overlap with the Franklins you mentions.  My family lived on Wellington St.

I will check back as I dig farther and when I do DNA.
