Hello I am Mary Tobin from Melbourne and looking for relatives or information about William Tobin born 1790 who married Margaret Tyrell born 1810. They are both buried at Johnswell cemetery.  I am visiting in September 2019 and would like to know how I can find their graves please.  Thank you for your help.  Regards, Mary Tobin

  • Dear Mary from Melbourne:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

I believe that the cemetery that you are looking for may be in St. John's in Kilkenny City.  If so,Historic Graves has transcribed those headstones and you can find information about it here:  https://historicgraves.com/graveyard/st-john-s/kk-stjh

If you need any further assistance or if we can arrange to have one of our volunteers meet you while you are in Kilkenny, please let me know.  I will forward this post to them and they may contact you via the thread.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

i Thanks so much Jane. I will be arriving in Dublin on September 28 and plan to come to Kilkenny for a night to visit the cemetery ( probably Sept 30 or Oct 1 ). If someone is able to meet me at the cemetery that would be wonderful. I will be able to work out how to get to the cemetery . I will do some searching in the records and get back to you .

  • Hi Jane I had a bit of a look at the cemetery information although I didn't get far.  Can you help me - is Johnswell cemetery the same as St.Johns in Kilkenny City? At this early stage of searching it all seems very confusing - the information I have so far suggests that they are buried at Johnswell cemetery.  Thanks again for your support.  Regards, Mary

  • Dear Mary:

My understanding is that St. John's is the same as Johnswell Graveyard.  Historic Graves has the graveyard records transcribed and here is a link to aTobin grave:

Let me know what you think of the above, and I will ask a Kilkenny volunteer to clarify.

    All the best,

    Jane

Hi Jane thank you ... yes I did see the photo of that grave and wondered whether it may be our Tobin family grave. I’m wondering how I find that out ? Once again I appreciate your generosity and kindness in helping me out. Regards Mary

  • Hi Mary:

My pleasure to assist!  I think that the best way to try to find out that information is to contact the parish office of St.John's.  The information is here:  https://www.stjohnskilkenny.com/  I would recommend that you email them beforehand and ask them about this family headstone.

Please keep me posted and I will try to assist as needed.

    Kind regards,
