Hi - I am looking to find information or make connections with anyone related to or knowing about the Woods family from Cavan townland. Arthur Woods was a farmer there according to the Griffiths Valuation. He had at least three children who emigrated to Australia - John, Edward and Margaret - on the Sirocco in 1864. John married Sussanah Louisa Entricken in 1866 in Maitland NSW. Susannah was also from county Tyrone and am interested in pointers to see where she may have come from.

Cheers

  • Brett,

Arthur Woods died 23.6.1894 aged 90.  The informant was his son Blayney Woods.

The Valuation revision records on the PRONI site show that the farm passed to a John Coulter c1881. (The years are sometimes not absolutely accurate. It probably changed hands when Arthur died).

Arthur’s wife was Margery and she died 25.3.1885.

I don’t see a Blaney Woods in the marriage or death records nor in the 1901 or 1911 censuses. Looks like after his parents death he too left Ireland.

You haven’t said what denomination the family was. If looking for baptisms you’ll need to search church records. Donacavey Church of Ireland has records from 1800 onwards, Fintona Presbyterian from 1836 onwards and the RC records start in 1847. Only the RC records are on-line. For the others you would need to get someone to look them up in PRONI.

Found a marriage for Arthur’s daughter Marjory Woods to Hugh Woods on 12.11.1868 at Donacavey Church of Ireland. (Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church so she was probably Church of Ireland, and those would be the records to focus on if looking for baptisms etc).

You could search the irishgenealogy site looking for other marriages for the Woods family.

There was no Woods farm in Cavan in the 1827 tithes so it looks as though Arthur acquired it after that.

The surname Entricken is a mystery. There’s no-one of that name in Ireland in the 1901 census. It’s not a name I have ever come across. Perhaps it’s been mistranscribed?

  • Correction to previous post, Arthur's year of death was 1884, not 1894.
