I am helping a friend find location in Co. Mayo associated with her ancestors. She will be traveling to Ireland from the U.S. next week (June 12, 2023).

Her family story says her 3x great grandfather was an 'administrator' in a workhouse in Co. Mayo before he emigrated to Canada about 1846. His name was Wm. Philip Kennedy and along with wife Catherine O'Boyle and family left Ireland as the Great Hunger was upon them. Family lore says Wm was first cousin to Rev. John McHale, archbishop of Tuam.

In my brief research, I see where others have suggested (without record) that Wm and family were from Lecarrowanteean or Kilfian area.

I would appreciate knowing if Wm Philip Kennedy was indeed associated with a workhouse somewhere in Co. Mayo. From what I gather, the closest workhouse to where I suspect he lived, was in Ballina. It seems however, the workhouse there didn't really start admitting inmates until 1847 which would have been after they emigrated.

If someone has information about Wm Philip Kennedy, especially to verify his 'employ' at a Mayo workhouse pre-1846, I'd appreciate learning more about him. Supposedly he was born 1795.

Thanks so much!

Kathleen
