Civil Parishes throughout County Donegal (IrelandXO Links)

PARISH NAMES THOUGHOUT COUNTY DONEGAL.

Trying to find out which Civil Parish you come from can tend to be confusing enough. In my own personnel experience I had gone the whole way through school, and starting the process of getting married before having to write down and referencing the name of my own Parish and in turn learning the names of the many different other Parishes surrounding me in North West County Donegal.

It is certainly not as prominent on documentation nowadays, but in the past, people most readily identified themselves with their Parish. It is how school and religious systems were generally organised. Parishes often ignore the boundaries of Towns and Counties, making them more specific to the local Community.  In the 19th Century, emigrants from Ireland usually named their Parish as their point of origin to connect their descendants back to that same place.

And so. to help others find the names of the Civil Parish we as locals would call home and to help the descendants of emigrants that are tracing their family history, I have created a complete list of Civil Parishes and their locations throughout the County. They are simply displayed below as North-West Donegal, South-West, South-West and North-East Donegal. You will see the name of the Civil Parish on the left (which is a link) followed by the names of the main villages, towns or known features that will help you orientate you to your place of interest.

Clicking on the link will bring you directly to the Parish Page of interest where you can see all the local information that has been posted up on the Ireland Reaching Out Website (irelandxo.com). It is a work in progress but before long each main page for these Parishes in Donegal will have helpful links attached such as a Parish Map and local historical links.
