We first hear Marys’ voice shipboard on 1 June, 1881 from the steamer Frisa out of New York, but her adventure began at the Boston-Albany train depot. Mary Theresa Fisher is an Irish colleen from Derry, Ireland, working in Boston as a lady’s companion. She pens three journals between 1881 and 1883 that detail travel throughout Europe and Great Britain. Marys’ narrative allows the reader to experience a unique first-person account of global culture, customs, individuals, prominent tourist landmarks, and historical events; all through the lens of a woman ahead of her time. As Marys’ great-granddaughter, it is my privilege to share her words and my reflections in - An Irish Colleen Travels Abroad.
