Close by, on the southern side of Portumna Castle, are the ruins of a Dominican Friary dating back to 1426. The Dominicans had as their patrons the local OメMadden Sept. This Religious Order took over from the Cistercians who had established a foundation at Portumna in 1252 and had remained there for over 100 years.
