Hello,

I am looking for more information about James "Jemmy" Hope (1964-1847) of Templepatrick (member of the United Irishmen) & his wife Rose Mullan (1770-1830) & their family. I believe that I may be descended from Jemmy through his son James. My 2x great grandmother was Agnes (Nancy) Hope whose father was listed as James Hope (Monkstown in 1854). It was believed within the family & passed down that Jemmy was Agnes' grandfather but I have been unable to confirm this. Through LDS, I have searched the Templepatrick registers from 1831-1863 &  found no Hope surnames.

Any help would be greatley appreciated!!

  • ancestry.com does show a family tree (owner:jdkurt) for Jemmy Hope.

Agnes Hope (1834-1872) was the daughter of James Hope (1797-1878). James was the son of James (Jemmy) Hope (1764-1847) and Rose Mullen (1770-1830).

Agnes was married to James McFerran (1833-1898)

    Their children are listed as:

Daniel; Grace; Susan; Barbara; Jane; Margaret; James; Samuel; Eliza and Martha.

Agnes had a brother named Robert Hope (1833-1905) married to Margaret J Robinson (1836-1891)

They had a son named William J Hope. William married Mary Courtney (one of my ancestors).  I met Mary's granddaughter, Doreen, during a visit to Templepatrick in 2000. She is my third cousin. The next year they made their first trip to the USA to visit us. We have become very close with her and her family. They are coming to the USA later this year to attend our daughter's wedding.

We loved our trip to Northern Ireland. Spent time in Templepatrick, Belfast and other places in County Antrim. Doreen lives in Doagh, near Templepatrick and Ballyclare.

Most of our family records are from the Templepatrick Presbyterian church records. Dorren attends the church that the Courtneys built in 1845.

    Hi Russ,

Thanks so much for your reply. The tree you found on ancestry is mine although I'm not 100% certain of all the relationships.    What I do know for certain is that Agnes Hope & James McFerran were my 2x great grandparents & that James Hope was her father. So I am related to the William Hope that married your ancestor Mary Courtney. It has been passed down through the family that we are descended from Jemmy Hope. Where I run into trouble is connecting my James Hope to Jemmy.

There is only one James Hope on Griffiths Valuation & I'm certain that he's MY James Hope but I am having trouble making the connection between him & Jemmy. On the children's marriage records James is listed as a clerk & then a weaver. Jemmy was a weaver so it makes sense that his son might be as well.  Also his childrens' weddings took place in 2 different parishes. So I'm wondering if there were 2 James Hopes in the area & perhaps one was a son of Jemmy & one a nephew?? As a member of the United Irishmen, Jemmy was on the move a lot. I wonder if the children's births would not have been registered for safety reasons?

I'm planning a trip to NI in the spring & will be visiting Templepatrick. I am from Canada.I have cousins in Bangor, Belfast, & Carrickfergus. If your Courtney relatives have any further information about the Hopes I would greatly appreciate it.

So nice hearing from you & thanks again,

    Jacqueline
