My 4x g. grandmother Bridget Strudgeon/Stridgen came from ;Loughgall and it seems fled along with other Catholics at the time of the Diamond Fight in 1795.  She went to Foxford-Ballina area of Co., Mayo at that time but I cannot find her on any lists of those leaving Armagh.   She was married to John Lawn and had a baby who died on the flight from Co. Armagh to Co, Mayo.

I'm hoping to get some assistance in finding more information/records on  the Strudgeon/Stridgen family in Loughgall and Bridget in particular, and marriage record for her and John.  They had 3 sons that I know of in Co, Mayo as follows:

John - born abt 1801; William- born abt 1805;  Robert- born abt 1809

  • From everything we have found, all the Strogens in Southern Ireland appeared to be located in one small area of Co. Mayo, namely the Ballina and Attymass area. We think all the Strogens came from one family based in the Toomore area, namely Dove Hall/Belgarrif House which I can send you the link to if you would like. We are pretty certain that the name Strogen is Hungarian/Russian, but because of lack of earlier records in Ireland due to the Rising of 1916, it is near impossible to trace the Strogens back to their origins. We do know a few that left the country and went to America. There are two families of Strogens in England, both my uncles. One in Wales and one on the south coast, but have only been there since the 1960s.

We know that "Strogens" who emmigrated to America were wrongly recorded as "Strogans" on some records and also "Sturgeon". Records here have showed up as Sturgeon even though we have managed to trace them back to actually be named Strogen.

If you could maybe send me your email i would be delighted to share the information i have on my own ancestors if you would like. I am so glad I have come across someone else wanting to research this. My father Patrick Strogen passed away in 2009 at the age of 39. Since then I have been trying to research my family history, with a lot of trouble. I am only 19 and any help is appreciated.

  • Hi Carragh,

I’m also descended from John and Bridget through their John (bc 1801) and John’s son John Lawn Jr. We also have a family tradition that the Lawns were from County Armagh but so far I’ve only found records from their stay in Mayo. Did you find anything else about the Lawns in Armagh?
