John and Mary were my great grand parents.

They had three children before immigrating to New Zealand in 1874.

John's brother also immigtated (to Australia) but I am unaware of any siblings of Mary.

The Walls who currently live in Ennistymon are not related to me.

I am unawere of the Finn side of the family. Mary's parents were James Finn & Honor Carey. Any information greatly appreciated although unlikely to exist.

Thank you

  • Dear Ross:

I had sent you some information yesterday about your query.

However, have you also looked at the Clare Library website?  They have online material and they do updated with new resources.

I will make some enquiries with some local historians in the Ennistymon area and if I find out more information, I will contact you via the message board.

Many thanks for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out and the best of luck with your research.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Hello Ross, I have ancestors from Ennistymon so just wondering whether you have done dna test and uploaded results to gedmatch where we can compare results for possible matches.

Also we keep hearing that there are no registers prior to 1870. However these do exist. I queried this with Clare Heritage Centre as they had sent me dates of baptisms pre 1870 at Ennistymon years ago. They replied that they copied the registers and returned them to the Parish Priest. Thus there are 2 ways of getting access to records - pay Clare Heritage Centre for their time to look up records that you could look.up yourself if they were released as most are, or go to Ennistymon and ask the Parish Priest to let you look at them. If you decide to go with Clare Heritage Centre get a quote first. I got very little information for $40 about 25 years ago.

    Good luck with your search.
    Regards, Carmel

Thank you for your reply Jane.

But I did not receive any information from you yesterday?

Attached is all that I know about my Great Grand father when he lived in Ireland and all I am likely to know I suspect. I have visited the local library and found out some interesting information but will check again.

I an interested to learn all I can about life in Ennistymon in the mid 1800s when my ancestors lived there. I will be visiting Ennstymon in July.

    Regards and thanks.

  • Thank you Carmel for your reply.

No, I have not done a DNA test as three generation of our family left for New Zealand in 1874 leaving no relatives behind except Mary Wall's parents James and Honor Finn who died soon after.

My experience with the Clare Heritage Centre was a little more positive than yours as they were able to provide me details of one marraige and three baptisms several years ago.

Regards and good luck with your research also.

  • Dear Ross:

Thanks for your information. I spoke to the Local Studies Centre who stated that they do not have any local contacts in the area but that you are most welcome to call into them while you are in County Clare. The two archivists there are extremely helpful and it is well worth a visit.

It is unfortunate that those registers are not freely available to visitors such as yourself.  However I would definitely recommend your contacting the Parish Priest in Ennistymon to have a look at those registers.

If you need me to assist further, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane
