I am wanting to trace any family related to Anne Hassett nee Kennedy who was born, I believe,in Ennis in 1797,  Her husband's name was Patrick.  Anne emigrated as a widow to Australia in 1863 on the "Champion of Seas".  The family had lived on a two acre block at Gortaniska from at least 1822, the date of her marriage.  Her children were:                                                                                                                                                        Mary b.1831                                                                                                                                      John b. 1833                                                                                                                                      Honora b.1835                                                                                                                                  Martin b.1837                                                                                                                                    Anne b.1839                                                                                                         all of whom emigrated to Australia in the 1850s or 60s.                                                  Martin and Margaret Hogan married in Ireland in 1860  and had two children - Martin and John. The godfather of John (baptised in 1860) was a Patrick Clancy from Gortaniska.                                                                                                                                                                                                    I have tried unsuccessfully to obtain any further information from the Clare Genealogy Centre. Anne Hassett was my great-great-great grandmother.  I am hoping to travel to Ireland next year and plan to spend a few days in the Crusheen area, not far from where the family lived.  I would appreciate any information that could be provided.                                                                                                                                                                                 Thanking you                                                                                                                                                                            Cheryl Hassett

  • Dear Cheryl:

Many thanks for your query to Ireland Reaching Out.  I have had a look for you and if you want to send me further information or your email address at:  tulla@irelandxo.com, that would be great.  The information is sketchy but it may be worth having a further look at.

    KInd regards,

    Jane.

  • Dear Jane,

Thank you very much for your reply.  The only further information I have is that Margaret Hogan was, I think, from Ruan, and that Anne's first child, Andrew, had died in Ireland.   Martin's child, Martin, had also died.  According to Griffith's Valuations of 1855 the family were living at Gortaniska.  Patrick had died by this time.                        .                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Once again, thank you,                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Cheryl

  • Dear Clare,

Thank you.  I have received a reply from Jane.

                                                    Regards,                                                                                                                                           Cheryl Hassett

  • Dear Jane, Thank you for your previous help from 2014.  I am hoping to find some information on the family of origin of Anne Hassett nee Kennedy.  From the Griffiths Valuation map of 1855 I have been able to see the block on which Anne and her family lived at Gortaniska.  A short distance away, in the neighboring townland of Ballyvanna, a family of Kennedys headed by a John and a Thomas Kennedy had lived since at least the early 1800s, on block no.5.   In addition, a Patrick Hassett and an Andrew Hassett lived as owners and tenants at Ballyvanna, as recorded  in the List of Freeholders, 1821.   The name Andrew occurs frequently in my family history, and occurs in the present generation.  It has been difficult to find a recorded link to this Kennedy family , but I wonder if there may be some information that has been passed down through oral history.  I was able to visit the Crusheen area on a trip to Ireland in 2015 and to have had the family history information added so much to the trip.  I have written a poem relating to Anne's life and it was greeted with interest by some of the people I met in Ireland.  Yours sincerely, Cheryl Hassett.
