Hi, my husband and I are visiting Ireland from Australia in May. As part of our journey we are travelling to County Clare to find where my Great Grandparents lived.  Michael Doolan was born in 1837 in Ballynahown (I believe).

His parents were James Doolin and Mary Howard, who died in Co Clare. The family lived on "the green road", either near Ballynahown or Ennistymon.  I have attached a couple of photos - one showing the road and one of the original home. Would someone know exactly where they are?

Michael was one of 6 children, who all immigrated to Australia around 1863.

Michael married Susan McGrath in 1859 in County Clare (Touclae I believe). Susan was born in Gleninagh, Co Clare in 1842. (I think her father's name was William).  I know nothing more of this family unfortunately.

I would appreciate any assistance. We are going to stay in Doolin for a couple of nights too. Kind regards Donna

    Donna:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I hope you and your husband have a great trip. Make sure you stop in at Gus O'Connors pub in Doolin.

I live in the States so I can't help you with the old house.

The RC records for the parish do not start until 1854 so you will likely not find baptismal records. I looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing and there were no James Doolan/Doolin records but there is a James Dowling in Ballynahown and I'm wondering if this is his record. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/clare/killilagh.htm

I also located an 1887 civil death index record for a James Doolin in the Ennistymon registration district. Possibly this is your ancestor.

I also checked the 1901 census for Ballynahown and there were two Doolin/Doolan families in the townland. Not sure how they are connected to your family.

You may also want to look into autosomal DNA testing.

  • Thanks Roger, Yes I believe the James Doolin you found could be my Gr Gr Grandparent. I appreciate all your assistance and we will visit this pub for sure! Kind regards Donna

  • Hi Donna,

Michael Doolan was my 2nd great grandfather's (James Doolan 1849-1927) brother. Many of the connections are on the Doolan Roche Family Tree on ancestry.com  I am having my autosomal DNA being tested, and results should be in a few weeks. My mother and I will be travelling to Ireland around June 20 2016, so let me know if you are still there. Kind regards, Angela Doolan.
