Hello,

I'm looking for more information on my great great great grandfather and grandmother. I have read that many Hickey's and O'Hickey's came from County Clare, but I do not know for sure if this is where they were living in the early 1800's.

James and Eliza Hickey

Approximate DOB: 1812-1815

I believe they were married in Ireland and migrated here to the U.S. around 1840.

I would appreciate any help! You can message me back here and/or at chelsey@knights.ucf.edu

  • Hi Chelsey,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information on the Hickey?s gets in contact with you.

Your search will be much easier if you could narrow down place of origin as most Irish record sources are based on specific locations, usually a parish. The name Hickey was quite common in mid-19th century Ireland as you can see from this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?Surname=hickey&fuseaction=Go.

Do you have any documentation pertaining to the family that mentions any place names at all? This can include wills, marriage/death records, census records, letters, diary entries etc.

There are some places where you can search online, however it may be difficult to discern whether the results are relevant to your family or not without more information:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However so far only Counties Dublin, Kerry, Carlow and parts of Cork have been covered.

Have you tried looking into the family?s emigration? Sometimes more infomation can be found at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. You may be lucky and find a place name here. For information on US immigration records check http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

If they did come from Co. Clare, you may find the County Clare Library very useful as they have an excellent family history collection. Be sure to check the ?Donated Materials? section of the website. Here is the link:

Some other websites that yo umay find useful are:

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you so much for all of those wonderful resources. I will continue searching on them to find some more information. Unfortunately, my family doesn't have any idea of the location in Ireland that my family came from, so I will have to keep searching. Thanks again!
