Hi,

My great great grandmother was born in Desertserges in 1825.  Her parents were Symon Sheehan and Mary Sheehee.  Their other children are Frank, Margaret, Cate and Simon.  Ellen emigrated.  I'm not sure about the others.   I think Margaret married Tim Finn.  I'm looking for any information re: the family.

Sincerely,

Lisa FItzgerald

  • Lisa:

Clare Doyle asked me to review your message board query. I went to www.irishgenealogy.ie which is a free Irish government site which has church records for the Diocese of Cork and Ross which includes Desertserges. Possibly you also used this site.

I found five baptismal records which match the children you identified in your note:

    Frank 4/27/1820

    Ellen 2/18/1825

    Margaret 7/28/1829

    Cate 6/21/1829

    Simon 10/28/1834

I could not locate the marriage record for Simon and Mary which likely occured in 1818-1819. Desertseges RC records go back to 1813 but I'm not sure if that incldes marriages. Possibly, Mary was from another parish and the wedding was held there.

I could not locate Symon/Simon Sheehan in the Tithe Applotment listings.

I also looked in the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household lsting. There were three Sheehan listed but not the names of any of the males. There were also three Finn records. No Tim but a Tom. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cork/desertserges.htm

Let me know how I can further assist you.

  • Clare and Roger,

Thank you both so much for responding.  Yes that is the right family, Roger.  I haven't been able to find any church records re: Simon and Mary's marriage either so I'm sad to learn you couldn't.  Are there any other opportunities to explore re: finding that information and/or where Simon and Mary were from and their parents?

I've decided that this is Simon's sister:

  • Roger,

I've decided that this is my Margaret Sheehan.  AT one time, I was able to find the marriage certificate but wasn''t able to now.    Maybe I've jumped to conclusions here.

  • Lisa:

I noticed that I had the wrong year for Cate's baptism. Should be 1832 but you probably know that.

it looks likely that you won't find a marriage record for Simon and Mary or their baptismal records.

Here is the link to the Enniskeane/Desertserges parish. http://www.corkandross.org/parishes.jsp?parishID=29

Contact the parish office. They have marriages back to 1816. They should be able tpo look from 1816-1819 to see if Simon and Mary were married there.

I would agree that Cath Finn is the daughter of your Margaret.

I also located two other baptismal records for Thomas Finn and Margaret Sheehan-- twins Thomas and Mary baptized in June 1869. There is also a Jeremiah Finn baptism in March 1863 parents Thomas Finn and Mory Sheehan. Is this Margaret?

  • Hi Roger,

I haven't been able to confirm that the Finn's are related to me so I've let that lead go for now.  I found a DNA relative who lives in the UK.  Her ancestor is Ellen Donovan who married a James Coffey in 1830.  They were from Desertserges.  I found their children but can't find the link between the Sheehans/Sheehee's and the Donovans or the Coffey's.

It seems to me they have to be related to my Sheehans or Sheehee's but I can't figure out how.  I haven't met any other matches so far who have roots that they know of from Desertserges.  It just seems like too much of a coincidence. Also, one of our common matches has a Sheehan listed as a surname.  I've written to him but haven't heard back yet.

I do have a Jeremiah Donovan (actually that Ellen Sheehan married when she got to NY) but always thought he was from Dunmanway.

Any direction would be great appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    Lisa Fitzgerald
