Dear Mike,

Thank you so much for the information about Ardura. My cousin, his wife and I were in Balydehob in June and showed the picture of the house my aunt took 80 years ago to a local real estate agent, but he was unable to help. Now I know where to look next time I am in Ireland.

My goddaughter Allegra said that you were in touch with her so I am sure I will be hearing more from/about you and your side of the family. Thank you for solving one of the many family mysteries.

I live in Toronto, Canada. Where do you live?

Glad to be able to help, I have been researching the Connell’s in Kilcoe Parish for some time, I have been studying the Griffith Maps and records and comparing the data for analysis (I have a degree in Cartography, so have spent 30 years studying maps). I have been able to locate Connell’s who live close to each other and leased property from the same Landlord, now with DNA I am able to make some more connections and because of the age of their children, I have made the assumption that they are brothers.

One lost connection is who went to Canada and settled where, my GGG Grandfather and his family left Ireland in 1863, landed in New York and then headed for Canada where he died within a few months. His wife and children then left Canada and went to Chippewa Wisconsin, where many Other Irish from Schull and Kilcoe Parish settled.  Why did they go to Canada is my big mystery......

I live in La Crosse, Wisconsin, about 100 miles south of Chippewa.....

  • Dear Mike,

Glad to meet you, though I wish I had known you sooner! My cousin and I had a wonderful if brief time in Ballydehob and Schull one day in June and would love to have had your expertise in cartography.

I'm not on ancestry.com so I don't know if there is any information there on my maternal great-grandfather, Samuel Connell, but many years ago his one of his grandsons, Sherman Connell of Illinois, shared the information he had with my aunt Win, and I'd be hapy to send that on to you.

The only Canada connection that I know of is on my grandmother Copithorne's side. There are a lot of Copithornes in Alberta.

    All the best,

    Jean

I would be very interested in seeing what Sherman Connell shared, I did find a passport application for his father John Richard Connell when he went back to Ireland in 1919 to visit his sick brother.  His brother William died in 1911, so I do not know who he was visiting.

  • Dear Mrs. Jean Connell Hoff,

I'm doing a research project about Kabuki theater and saw your name as a translator of one of Mr. Kawatake Toshio's books. I wonder if it is possible to have a conversation online with you. Please let me know at brendarazo@hotmail.com . Many thanks in advance. Have a good one.

    Brenda Razo.
