My great-grandfather was Terence Butler, of County Cork, born c. 1840, son of John Butler and Catherine Leary. Terence joined the British army, 30th foot, in 1854, as a drummer. He married Margaret Kelly in 1866 in Montreal, Canada and left the army in 1870. He lived the remainder of his life in Montreal.

The known children of Margaret and Terence were Joseph Albert, Gertrude Mary Emily, Francis Patrick, James Frederick Patrick, Agnes and Ann Avaline. On irishgenealogy.ie, I have found a baptism for Matthew Butler, 1829, son of John Butler and Cathe Leary in the parochial area of West Schull (Goleen). I have also found a marriage for  Florry Sullivan and Norry Butler, 1839, with John Butler and Cate Leary as witnesses. This was in the parochial area of Innishannon.I do not know if this is my family.

I have not found any other family members so am looking for some help to trace the family in Cork. Terence, John, and Catherine are names that continued in the family. None of the children of Terence was named Matthew

 Any guidance appreciated. Thanks.

  • My grandmother was a Leary of Goleen, but I don't know connections that far back and wish I did to help you sort your Leary connection there. The Leary Family went back as far as the 1659 census in Goleen/Kilmoe civil parish and the Butlers show up from 1820-1850's in the parish.

With all good wishes in your search,

  • Thanks for your response on my post re: the Butlers of County Cork. I have two other lines that emigrated from Ireland to Quebec, Canada around 1830 and I fear that it may be too early to find much information an any of these lines. I still hold out hope though. Every little bit of information helps!
