Hi

I am researching my family in Kanturk Parish.  I am looking for baptismal records in the 1850’s.
The nli.ie website indicates that there are two baptismal microfilms1844-1881 and another 1849-1881.  The 1844-1881 microfilm is very hard to read.  Do you know if anyone has transcribed these records?   If so, how would I get access to the transcribed records.  They do not appear to be in Ancestry, Familysearch or Findmypast.

Also are these duplicate record or from different church within Kanturk Parish?

Also there is a 15 June 1877 civil marriage record for a Mary Cronin marrying a John Buckley in Kanturk Parish.  However I cannot read the townland and none of the townlands currently in Kanturk seem similar.  Would anybody be able to identify this townland.

Thank you,

Bob Cronin

  • There are millions of church records transcribed at rootsireland.ie. I looked at the 1877 marriage and the townlands were given as Islanduff for John and Dromskarrha for Mary. You might check the spellings on townlands.ie.

  • The current anglicized spelling for Dromskarrha appears to be Dromskarragh, and there are two neighboring townlands called Dromskarragh Beg [Drom Scarbhach Beag = "Little/Lower Sharp Ridge"] and Dromskarragh More [Drom Scarbhach Mór = "Big/Upper Sharp Ridge"]. You can see more info about Dromskarragh Beg at this link, and there's a further link there for info about Dromskarragh More:

The current anglicized spelling for Islanduff appears to be Islandav [Oileán na nDamh = "Island of the Ox"]. You can see more info about Islandav at this link:

My own Cronin great-grandmother grew up about 3 miles to the southeast of Islandav.

  • The film 05008 / 04 is for baptisms in Kanturk Workhouse 1st September 1844 to 1881, Film 05008 / 02 is for the regular parish.

The records should transcribed on both Ancestry and FindMyPast - I spot check a couple for May/June 1850 from 05008 / 02 and located transcripts on FindMyPast ok ...

e.g. James Allen bapt. 12 May Peacock Lane, Daniel Egan bapt. 26th June Bluepool[?]

The Workhouse baptism register is much smaller, just 32 images, and parts of this badly faded and very difficult, at times impossible to read .. the format is a little unusual, child's name is after the mother, or parents, and date, and instead of address there's a column titled 'To What Electoral District Chargeable'. The parts I was able to make out had many of the baptisms as 'illegitimate', of the few I was able read I did find on FMP, just listed as Kanturk, but at the top of the register image is listed 'Kanturk Union Workhouse', I was not able to find any of these on RootsIreland.

  • Kanturk is in the Diocese of Cloyne and all church records in the diocese were digitised in the 1990's and are available in booklet form by surname and christian name so all children born to a family are consecutively listed under that family's names . It would be helpful to contact the parish sec.for Kanturk and ask for a check on the details you want .you should find office times on the parish website..You can check on the NLI site for dates d digitised records
