Excited to have found this site!  I'm MJ from Dallas Texas. My 3X-great-grandfather (Dennis Sullivan, son of Jeremiah Sullivan)  and two of his brothers (Daniel and John) immigrated from "Meenygorman" Newmarket to Alexandria, Louisiana, USA sometime in the early to mid-1840s (I actually think that they might have left Ireland *before* the famine).  Another brother (Timothy) immigrated later during the famine to Montreal, Quebec (where he died of typhus shortly after and two of his children ended up in Texas with Uncle Daniel).  A sister (Mary Sullivan) married William Cotter of Millstreet.  I've found much of this information on someone else's genealogy website:  http://descentbysea.com/category/family-descent/line-sullivan/sullivan-…

I have so many questions but I'll start with these few...

1) Are there any records at all of Jeremiah's birth in about 1778, death in about 1848, or marriage?  Do we know who his parents are?

2) I see "Meenygorman" as a road on google maps just north of Newmarket town.  What is "Meenygorman"?  Is it an area of Newmarket or the name of a farm?  It is referenced in letters sent by Jeremiah to his son Daniel in Louisiana and Texas (yes, someone saved about 15-20 letters from the Sullivans in Ireland written in the mid to late 1800s and they are kept in the library of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas!)

3) While most of the family moved to the US at about the same time, I suspect I have some Irish cousins who are descendants of William and Mary Cotter.  Not sure if any are in/around Newmarket?

For the record, Jeremiah has about 75 (that I know of) descendants in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Montana, Arizona, Massachusetts, New York... and counting!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Meengorman is a 495 acres townland in Clonfert civil parish in Co. Cork.

We have a parish liaison for the Newmarket area and I will let her know about your message.

  • Roger,

Regarding "Meengorman"... how is that pronounced?  I have seen it on various documents as "Meenygorman," "Meenigorman," "Meenegorman" and you refer to it as "Meengorman."  Do you know the reason for all of the variances?

    Thanks!

Meengorman is the official spelling of the townland. Here is a link to a property that was just sold. Many of the townlands have different spellings that you will see all over either from a mistranscription or other reason. I've seen many different spelling variances for my grandmother's townland of Knockanaconny in Co. Roscommon.

  • I was wondering if Anne Marie, the parish liaison could assist me in finding confirmation of Jeremiah Sullivan's birth date (about 1778), death date (about 1848?) and/or marriage (I do not have a date for marriage, nor his wife's name though it might be Ellen).  He had 4 sons (Daniel, Dennis, John, Timothy) and 1 daughter (Mary).

    Welcome back!

I will forward your message to Anne-Marie. May be hard to find a baptismal record back to 1778 and death records prior to 1864 are problematic unless the RC church kept some records.

  • Hi MJ

Unfortunately the records for the Newmarket area start about 1800 for baptisms so there is no record for Jeremiah born in the 1700rds, there are also very few burial records and the name Jeremiah Sullivan is a very very common name in entire Cork

There is a Jeremiah Sullivan who married an Ellen Connell in Milford in Feb 1832 but that seems a bit late for someone born in 1778 but not impossible, Milford is 20 minutes away from Newmarket

    Kind regards,

    Anne Marie

  • Thank you Anne Marie.  I appreciate your time!  What a disappointment though.  I don't think Jeremiah/Ellen Connell married 1832 is the pairing I'm looking for as his children were born starting in about 1805 through 1817-ish.  We *do* think his wife is Ellen (possibly Leary).

If the baptism records begin in 1800, is it too much to ask you to look for the the baptism records for his children?

    Daniel Sullivan b. 1805 Newmarket

Dennis Sullivan b. 1807 Newmarket (my line)

    Timothy Sullivan b. 1810 Newmarket

    Mary Sullivan b. 1815 Newmarket

    John S Sullivan b. 1817 Newmarket

All the boys immigrated to the US, so I have lots of info from 1840 on - it's the early stuff that is a mystery.

  • Daniel Sullivan was born in The year 1831 to John Sullivan and betty Flynn in Newmarket Clonfert Co Cork.John Sullivan was my gggrandfather
Down through the generations there has been 3 Jeramiah Sullivan's in our family that I know of
I think Clonfert was the parish in those days not Newmarket.John.

  • John,

I think we are talking about two different Daniel Sullivans.  I have solid evidence that Jeremiah was a father to Daniel, Dennis, John, and Timothy.  The sons (and one daughter) were all born in the early 1800s in Clonfert.  From my research, I have found that there are many names used over and over which make the connections difficult.
