Hello,

I seem to have hit a wall in my search here. I am looking for info on a gentleman named either Benjamin or Francis Dwinell. I believe he was born in 1585 Ireland (not sure where) and died in topsfield Massachusetts. He had a son named Benjamin or Brian.

im not sure what denomination he belonged to, or much more of anything about him. I know Dwinell, along with Dwinnell, dunnell, Donnell and whatnot are all variations of Donald or MacDonald.

if anybody has any info or any tips on how to search further, please let me know

  • The surname Dwinell originated in County Derry ~ Londonderry, in the province of Ulster, where the family had a landed gentry seat from very ancient times.

Variations found of the name Dwinell include Devine, O'Devine, O'Devin, O'Deuin, Davin, Devane, Devenney, Dwane, Duane, Dwain, Dwayne, Dwayn, Devan, Davine, Devyne etc. Not to be confused with Donnell or McDonald.

Earliest records on RootsIreland show a Bryan O'Devin baptised 1-Sep-1655 in St Columb's Church of Ireland. Father – Turlagh O'Devin aka O'Deuin of Templemore who married Katharine O'Kannan in 1653 (witnessed by Hugh O'Donnell & Gilber Fleming) also in St Columb's Church of Ireland. Other records from this period reveal O'Devine Church of Ireland members in Clondermot and Killelagh.

You might also like to dig around the Down Survey for the location of variations of this surname circa 1640.

    Hope this helps!
