My mother was born here. Looking for info on her grandparents. She left, with her parents, in 1927.

  • Bella,

We need a bit more information if we are to help you. What was your mother’s name, when was she born (approximately) and what were her parents names?

  • My mother was Isabelle Gallagher. She was born in April 1925. She had a cousin of similar age who was called Isobel. I assume named after the same shared ancestor.  Her father was James Gallagher and her mother was Sarah O'Neill. I think Sarah was originally from Limavady. My mother's older brothers were Thomas and James. They all immigrated to Canada, leaving on the Athenia.  My grandfather's brothers were William and Thomas. Thomas died in the War and William also immigrated to Canada. He was married to Martha Mullan. They had been members of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. My great-uncle Thomas was buried in France.

  • James Gallagher & Sarah O’Neill married 4.12.1919. You can view their marriage certificate free on this link:

This looks to be Thomas in the 1901 census:

This looks to be that same family in 1911 but no sign of Thomas junior.

This looks to be Sarah in 1911:

You can use the irishgenealogy site to trace their births and hopefully the parents marriages.

  • iThank you so very much!  I'm pretty sure that that is the record of my grandparents marriage although my grandmothers age is off by a year. It's wonderful to see the information about my O'Neill line. The names match what my mother told me so it's nice to have the dates to go with it.
