The 1831 Irish Census has 383 McCloskeys in Dungiven, Londonderry! (free at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/) I couldn't see any O'Kanes in Dungiven however.

Derry is not included in the Tithe Applotments 1823-37

I couldn't fnd a baptism record for Patrick or Jane (?) in Derry

I hope this response is not too late. My great grandmother, Jane McCloskey, was born in Dungiven in 1832. She immigrated to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania as a young girl. She married James Lawler and they had seven children. She died in Pittsburgh. I have been trying to find more info on her but there is very little available. Her death certificate states her parents as James and Mary Mccloskey.  I went to Dungiven several years ago and I was also overwhelmed with how many Mccloskey there were and they all have common Christian names. Your information looks like we might have a connection. If you are interested in sharing info I would love to here from you. Thank you. Lynda Lawler Linaugh. 

Another region to search would be the Londonderry/Limavady region of County Derry. My great-grandfather's sister Sarah O'Kane of Clagan (near Limavady), Magilligan, Derry (1846-1924) married Bernard McCloskey of Londonderry (1845-1893), son of John, on 4 Dec 1879 in Londonderry. They had children Ellen, Michael (died young), Rose, Mary Jane, and Elizabeth. They moved to Limavady, where the family operated a bar. They were after the time period you are looking for, but the surnames were also common in this part of Derry.

      I am also looking into the McCloskey family.  My ancestor Patrick McCloskey (1794-1864) was born in Ireland, emigrated to the US. He lived in the Pittsburgh area, and later moved to Cincinnati.  His son John (1817-1881) was in the coal and coal shipping business, and lived in Port Perry, Pa.  His sister Mary Ann Maggini and brother William also lived in Port Perry. 

      I am now looking for a connection to Manus McCloskey or MacCloskey (1805-1871) from Dungiven.  He lived in Pittsburgh, and was in the coal business.  So far, the only connection I've found between John and Manus is a shared a business address in New Orleans.

Your post has a lot of overlap with my McCloskey ancestry.

My direct ancestor was Patrick McCloskey.  His wife was born Anne (Ann, Nancy?) O'Kane.

They emigrated to Baltimore (I think), then to Mount Savage Maryland where Patrick is said to have taught school.  The trail then leads to Port Perry.  

My research material is at my lake house and I'm operating on (dim) memory right now.

I believe that my Patrick McCloskey died in Port Perry or Braddock, PA.  As you no doubt know, Port Perry is buried under the site of the USS Edgar Thompson mill.

Jane McCloskey Lawler, my great grandmother lived in Pittsburgh.  Her death certificate signed by her son states she was born in Limavady, Derry and lists her parents as James and Mary McCloskey.  Her obituary says that she was a cousin of Cardinal McCloskey of NYC and that she immigrated to America as a young girl.  She names her oldest daughter Rosanna, and her sons  William, John, James, Joseph, and Thomas.   If anyone has any ideas or information that might lead me to her family and life in Ireland. You give Jane McCloskey’s parents as James & Mary McCloskey. You say she was born in Dungiven. Dungiven RC baptism and marriage records exists for the years 1825 – 1834. I see two possible marriages there. A James McCloskey and Mary Mulholland married on 28.10.1828. They appear to have lived in Dungiven town judging by the baptism of son Bernard there on 23.11.1829. Sponsors were Ambrose & Matty Mulholland.

A James McCloskey and Mary McCloskey married on 12.6.1832. They had a daughter Sarah baptised 17.11.1833 at which time they lived in Crebarky.

I didn’t see a Jane baptism c 1832 to those parents though.

Thanks for posting the link to the 1831 census.

Research to date by my branch of the McCloskey clan had my ancestor, Patrick, born in Dungiven in 1815 and emigrating to America in 1840, although there's scant evidence for either of these events.

If these dates are even approximately correct, he would have shown up in the 1831 census.  I see a Patrick in another parish but not in Dungiven.

I saw the marriage record of James McCloskey and Mary Mulholland and it could be the right family but I have never found a baptism for Jane McCloskey so I can't prove that they are the real deal.  My Jane McCloskey lived in Pittsburgh, P.  I found a Jane living with a large family of McCloskeys in the a850 census in Pittsurgh.  She was listed as a niece.  The names were Michael, Rose, Patrick, Francis, Henry, Mary, Margaret.  The naming pattern seems to be similar to several of your posts.   Have any of you McCloskeys done your DNA and posted it on Gedmatch?  That might be one way to see if any of us are related.  I'm not giving up.  Lynda
