The history of Enniskillen with reference to some manors in co. Fermanagh, and other local subjects

By W. COPELAND TRIMBLE. 1919.

CHAPTER I. THE PLANTATION OF ULSTER. The Town of Enniskillen owes its birth, in 1612, to the Plantation of Ulster. King James I ascended the throne in 1603, put into execution his plan for the plantation of the province of Ulster with English and Scotch settlers. Six counties of Ulster were confiscated, and by the scheme known as The Plantation of Ulster, was transferred to colonies of English and Scotch settlers, under British undertakers, to whom grants of land were given. In 1611 the native clans were expelled to west of the river Arney. There were ongoing hostilities, and by proclamation in 1643 the Governor ordered the Catholics out to the far side of the Arney, and a military post was established.  The area was thereafter continuously at war, with conflicts, ambushes, seizures, burnings of homes, farms and mills, privation, poverty and sorrows.

CHAPTER XVIII THE TOWNSFOLK

The town was planted in 1612. The only glimpse afforded of it is a sort of census of Enniskillen taken about 1630 showing names of inhabitants. The date is not indicated.
