Hi

The 1911 census gives:-

John Cullion  aged 78 living at No 4 Dundooan Lower Rosguill married for 49 year to Sarah Cullion aged 80  (nee Doherty--who I believe  was  my great great aunt.  Sarah had a brother Hugh who lived at Cashel, near Creeslough/ Doe Castle.this information was verbal from a reliable source but I cannot prove.)

I have a birth  certificate for their 3 children, daughter Mary born 15 June 1865, son Francis 3 February1871, and daughter Ann born  8 July1874.

The 1901 census does not show Mary or Ann  living with their parents but  does show Francis  is now married to Mary ( nee McBride -  taken from their children's birth certificate.)

1911 Census gives Francis aged 40  wife Mary aged 38  and their  8 children

daughter Sarah aged 14   (NB;  Sarah is a Doherty family name )

daughter Sophia aged 12

son John  aged 10

daughter Mary Agnis aged 8 (spellingas census)

son Francis aged 7

daughter Sussana aged 5 ( spelling as census)

son Michael aged 4

son Patrick aged 2

A death certificate for a Sarah Cullen  aged 82 of Dunooan dated 3 March 1912 with daughter in law Mary Cullen registering the death leads me to think this is a misspelling. Estimate birth year for Sarah 1830.

I have found a Kate  Cullion  in Griffith Valuation of 1858 living at Dunooan Lower a tennant of the Earl of Lifford..

Looking on a Google map  Dunooan  Lower is not on the map, please can anyone give me directions to find Dunoon Lower in the district of Rosguill in the Union of Milford?

Can anyone tell me the distance between Cool Upper Rosguill  and  Dunooan Lower and are they in the Parish of Kimacrennan.?

My family names are Gallagher, Doherty, Duffy, Deeney, and Gillespie all from  Co Donegal and  I am hoping that Cullion  might be easier to pin down. Cannot find any Cullion in the Eire phone book on line.

Is there any Cullions still in County Donegal? Who did the Cullion girls marry?

Any help - however slim- would be greatly appreciated, heres hoping.  Thanks for reading this.

Regard  Eileen

  • Hi Eileen

Thank you for getting in contact and Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I would like to try and help you as best as I can with your queries on the Cullion family and finding these locations you mentioned in the message. Thank you for adding all the information as this helps a lot.

I came across the John Cullion and Sarah Doherty homestead in Dundooan Lower, Rosguill, Donegal in the 1901 and 1911  Census Ireland. I attached both below for handiness.

The name Cullion and Cullen is a popular name in Mevagh and the surrounding Parishes. It is a very similar name to each other and you could find both recorded on different documentation depending on the individual taking down the name at the time or transcribing them later on in sites such as ancestry and rootsireland etc.

You would be right Eileen with the Death Certificate for Sarah Cullen aged 82. This would be without dought be Johns wife Sarah Cullion (Doherty). We are luck as lot of the time the age of the deceased is a guess at best!

  • The Townland of Dundooan can found in the Parish of Mevagh, and not far away from it you have the Townland of Cool Upper in the Parish of Kilmacrenan. Both these locations would be located close to the western shore of Mulroy Bay.

Dundooan Lower Townland, (in the Parish of Mevagh) Location - Dundooan Lower

The Parish of Kilmacrenan - Kilmacrenan - Parish Map

Cool Upper Townland, (in the Parish of Kilmacrenan) Location - Cool Upper

  • Hi Eilean, Please try out this link below:

Google Maps - Location of Francis Cullion's Plot of Land in Dundooan Lower back in 1858 (Plot 7).

It should drop you exactly where Francis Cullion's Plot 7 was situated. There seems to be two really old stone buildings on this Plot, which is a great find considering its 150 Years ago, as this may turn out to have been the old Cullion Family Homestead from back in the time. Unfortunatley for the other locations nearby Plots 9d (Francis) & 9c (Kate Cullion) seem to have been knocked at some stage.

    Hi Eilean,

I Interpreted the 1858 Griffith Valuation Maps for Dundooan Lower and found the location for the Plots of land for a Francis Cullion and a Kate Cullion from back in the 1850's. I think it is possible that Francis may have been the decendant of the family you happened to be looking about, The location and the name Francis Cullion is hard to ignore.

If you open the veiw maps in this link (link below) for askaboutIreland.ie - Griffith Valuation and compare it to the maps in the slides (attached file) I am hoping you will be able to see how I went about finding the location.

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNam…

I think I may be able to advise you on how to best to get local interaction back on this also.

I am wondering is the information above seem ok and easy enough to follow.

  • Hi Eilean, sorry for short delay, I have some good news for you. A relation of the Cullen family has indeed got in contact, and yes she is a decendant of John Cullion and his son Francis in the 1901 Census for Dundooan, the location of the homestead was also correct which I am very happy about. Great news!

If you wouldnt mind privately sending me on you contact details to clondavaddog@irelandxo.com I will be sure to put you and Bridget in contact. I only ask that you come back and maybe tell how you get on some time!

Sincere thanks to Paddy logue from Mulroy Drive for helping with thiss connecetion.
