  • Hi,

Thanks for your message. I hope that someone with information makes a connection with you and helps you to further your research.

In the meantime, have you tried looking in church records for more info? Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. Ballywalter civil parish is part of the Catholic parish of Ballygalget. To see what is available follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Down&parish=Ballygalget&churchid=391

Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

You could also try looking online at:

    www.familysearch.org and

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site. To see what is available for Down follow this link:

I did a quick search in Griffith?s Valuation (land record 1848-64). There was one John Kane recorded in Ballywalter:

  • The original post from kiwibev asked for a marriage certificate for John Kane & Hannah Alford. There won’t be one because they were only introduced in Ireland in 1845. But you might get their marriage details in the local marriage register. Those records are probably not on-line and would involve a trip to PRONI in Belfast. No-one has said what denomination they were but judging by the adjacent families they were probably either Presbyterian or Church of Ireland.

The Church of Ireland records for Ballywalter only go back to 1845. 1st Presbyterian has baptisms from 1824 and marriages from 1803; 2nd Presbyterian has baptisms from 1820 and marriages from 1845.

I looked at Griffiths Valuation for Ballyferis for 1863 and I see one Kane household listed, out of about 24 households. So possibly a relation to John who married Hannah.  That was for a John Kane. He had plot 2c - a house and small garden with 2 roods of land on the Hopes farm. So that was a labourer/weaver’s cottage. (Today that’s probably part of the Rosebank Caravan Park complex on the seafront on Whitechurch Rd.) The plots were elater renumbered and John’s house became 2e and a James Kane joined him on 2d.  Perhaps a relation? The Valuation revision records show that John Kane was deleted as tenant in 1883 and James Kane in 1880.

There’s mention of John Kain of Ballyferis on this link. He died in 1866:

    https://web.archive.org/web/20140707185052/http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/K/Ka.htm

John’s wife Mary Ann Kane’s death in 1889 in Ballyferris said she was dependent on relatives and the informant was a Robert Bell of Ballyferris. So possibly a family connection there.

I looked for a death for James Kane/Kain did not see any that definitely fit. No Kanes in Ballyferis in the 1901 census.

Looking at the information we have, the Kane/Kain family were probably weavers or labourers. John who married Hannah probably moved to Scotland because the employment prospects were better there. And of course it’s a short easy journey. And most of the folk in Ballywalter were descended from Scots who settled there in the 1600s so ties with Scotland remained strong and it was a natural place to move to for that reason too. Folk from County Down often went to work in Scotland on a seasonal basis too, which is possibly how John met Hannah Alford. John’s death certificate in Scotland should give you his parents names and occupations, so you may be able to work out if he was related to John or James Kane of Ballyferris in Griffiths.

  • Thank you for the information posted. I believe I am also a direct descendant of John Kane and Hannah Alford. I believe their eldest son James, born 1839 when the family lived in Ballywater, before moving to Galway Scotland where there other seven children were born. Mary 1841, Elizabeth 1845, John 1847, Jane 1849,, Hannah 1851, Sarah 1853, William 1855.

James Kane migrated to Tasmania after his marriage. I have lots of records of his descendants from Tasmania. For some unknown reason the spelling of Kane by these descendants is Kaine.

Is the John Kane born 1847, the same John Kane who migrated to New Zealand on the ‘William Davie’ in 1867? Our family records only show he was born 1847 in Wigtownshire, Scotland. I am trying to confirm this connection as the NZ descendants have no records beyond John Kane’s date and place of birth, plus name and date of ship migrated to NZ on.

If this is the same John Kane, which the Tasmanian records believe to be true, then I am also a direct descendant of John Kane and Hannah Alford and very interested in exchanging family tree information with other descendants.

In the hope of confirming this connection I have also recently submitted to the ancestry DNA test available, as have my daughter and one nephew.
