Looking for the family members of Adam Finlay and his wife Flora Stanley Finlay. They had at least 6 children in County Down, 1800-1814, before coming to Ohio between 1814-1824. One family story has the family of the Belfast area but I have no proof of that. Adam and Flora's children all are buried together in a small cemetery in Ohio. Help wanted to find what parish they are from, and of course connect with that side of my own heritage!

  • Hi there,

Yes, it can be tricky locating the exact location where your ancestors originated. Knowing this is really key to finding more information.

You could try looking at newspaper death notices to see if this information or next of kin is mentioned. Perhaps the cemetery where they are buried has more information in the records there?

Without knowing exactly when they emigrated from Ireland is also difficult. If you had it narrowed down somewhat, you could check the immigration records there. Do you know what port they arrived at?

Do you know what they worked at when they arrived in the US?

Hopefully, someone in the County Down area will be know some more information and will be able to help you out further.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • Sinead,

All good questions. All tried over the years and have come up empty!

You'll notice I do have it narrowed down to a 10 year span, 1814-1824. Ships manifests in this era are pretty thin. None that have been checked thus far contain the prize! Now, family information states they came in through New York, but I couldn't prove that at this moment.

I'm going to hope someone from County Down finds me as I've exhausted all of my options on this side.
